Having practiced Falun Gong for some time, Li Jinzhong, a 50-year-old farmer of Tunliu County, Shanxi Province, and Chang Haochi, a 27-year-old student at the Economics and Trade Department of the Shanxi Coal Mining Administrators Training Institute, believed that they had achieved all-round fulfilment and could ascend to Heaven. They then burned themselves to death in early July 1999. The bodies, facing each other, were found sitting cross-legged in the manner of meditation.
