Li Genxiu, 55 years old, looked vibrant and always smiled at others. Last year, her two sons, who left the village for work, demolished their old home and built a new three-floor house in the village, which is quite eye-catching. Li Genxiu and her husband do not do farm work anymore and live a happy life,  taking care of their two grandsons and one granddaughter.

However, while recalling her experiences of believing in Falun Gong eighteen years ago, Li still felt scared: “It’s lucky that I realized my error. Otherwise, I couldn’t have lived until now and enjoyed the good fortune of my sons.”

She became a follower of Falun Gong and yearned for Paradise

Li Genxiu lived in Longyin community, Zengjia town, Shapingba District, Chongqing. The place where she lived is relatively remote. By the end of the twentieth century, life in that area was dull, and people living there were backward and closed minded. Information from outside passed from mouth to mouth.

One day in 1998, Li visited her sister in the neighboring village. A woman surnamed Yu in that village told her secretly that doomsday was coming and all the human beings on earth would die on that day. However, as long as you practiced Falun Gong, a master would come to save you on that day. Falun Gong told people to be nice and good. She claimed that by practicing this, you could bring good fortune to your whole family. On the doomsday, only those who practiced Falun Gong would survive and share the property and land of others.

Li believed what Yu said. She practiced Falun Gong with Yu frequently. When at home, she didn’t do housework or talk to her family but hid in her room to listen to tapes and practice the movements.

After a period of time, Yu conveyed new orders from the master to Li. He said that the population in the world is too big. The world originally belonged to practitioners of Falun Gong. Only when others die, can practitioners of Falun Gong get more fortune and live forever. Li was possessed and heard the call from her god. She believed firmly in what Falun Gong said. She even bought some rat poison and planned to drop it in the wells of the village.

Her family was quite dissatisfied with her because she went out to practice Falun Gong all day and isolated herself from others. Her husband and sons found that she had bought rat poison and got angry. After taking away the poison, her family told her that if she continued the practice, they would cut relations with her.

Li didn’t wake up to reality at that time. On the contrary, as told by her “master” Li Hongzhi, she believed that it was necessary for her to undergo those hardships. By doing so, her soul would live forever and she would become perfect.

Her illness was cured by medical science. She got back on the right track and the whole family lives a well-off life.

Between the summer and autumn of 1999, Falun Gong was banned by the government. After hearing this news, many people in the village pointed their fingers to Li and said that she was “possessed by the devil”. Her husband and sons felt ashamed.

After 2002, Li felt unwell because she sat in a dark room for long periods of time and lacked sunshine, exercise and nutrition. She couldn’t walk outside and her physical condition quickly turned bad. Her family urged her to go to hospital, but she believed that she would recover as long as she kept saying “Falun Dafa is good.” She refused to see a doctor.

In the autumn of 2005, her illness became more serious. Her sons sent her to the county’s hospital for treatment. It was found that the muscles of her legs had calcified and would be paralyzed without treatment.

During her hospitalization for nearly half a year, her husband, sons and daughters-in-law took good care of Li. Doctors and nurses told her of the harm caused by sitting cross-legged for long periods of time. Recalling what she’d done in the past few years, and that Yu had died of illness several years earlier, Li began to realize that Falun Gong couldn’t cure all diseases but actually makes a person ill. What’s more, the doomsday predicted by Falun Gong didn’t come. Her neighbors were living a better life, while her life became difficult because she practiced Falun Gong.

After she was cured, her life changed as well. She began to read analysis about Falun Gong on her cellphone, the Internet, and on TV. She also read a lot of cases in which Falun Gong ruined families. She came to realize that practicing Falun Gong could not bring longevity or fortune. To have health and fortune, you have to rely on yourself and work hard.

After Li stopped practicing Falun Gong, the whole family was reunited. Her sons and daughters-in-law went out to work. She and her husband took care of their grandchildren. Within a few years, they built a new house and their sons bought cars. They live a happy and well-off life.
