Mr. And Mrs. Hao
As the saying goes, "there is no such thing as a free lunch". This is a simple truth, but it has taken me a lifetime to understand.
My name is Hao Zhiqiang. I am a 63-year-old farmer in Hedao Village, Wansheng Township, Hanyuan County, Sichuan Province. Ten years ago, in order to get a wall clock from the cult “Sanshu Chriat”, my wife was dragged into the cult. This brought about a disaster which nearly killed me.
Years have passed, but I will always remember the Dragon Boat Festival in 2007, when my wife and I were targeted by the cult. At noon, my wife, Zhou Jianqun, and I went to the 70th birthday party of the leader of our production team’s father. After the banquets, Jiang Erjie (whose real name is Jiang Guizhen, the backbone of the cult), who was from the next village, talked alone with my wife and gave her some gifts: a wall clock, a piece of white cloth with a red cross on it, a book called "The Sparkling Spirit Journey" and a book called "The Kind Maternal Love". I thought the wall clock was beautiful, and it was convenient for keeping track of the time. I fixed the clock on the wall on the left side of my hall and hung the "winning flag" of the Sanshu Christ in the middle of the main wall of the hall as my wife asked.
Thus, my wife joined the Sanshu Christ cult in confusion.
In the next days, my wife often read the two books, reciting it sometimes. I think the strange things were that she knelt on the ground and chanted in front of the "cross" when she woke up every morning and every night before she went to bed, saying that the believers needed to pray in the morning and evening to get rid of evil and eliminate difficulties and illnesses, and the whole family would be in peace. I never believed in ghosts and gods, and I persuaded my wife several times saying, “there is no god, no devil, don't frighten yourself,” but my wife insisted that for the sake of our son, she needed to pray. She also said that no one had fallen ill since she started believing in the "Sanshu Christ". Some people know a lot of brothers and sisters through "Gospel" and some people improved their "hierarchy" as the "witness". I saw my wife being so serious in her belief in the "god", and I didn’t know that the “Sanshu Christ” is a cult, so I gave no more advice.
One night in September, I found that the pump at the bottom of our well had been stolen. I was going to go to the police station to report the case, but my wife said the pump would come back naturally if we prayed. I said to my wife, "if you can really get the pump back, it means that the “Sanshu Christ” works, otherwise it is a fraud and you need to stop believing it." Just then, my wife went into the room and knelt to pray to the “cross”. A month passed but the stolen pump did not return. It had been proved that the "Sanshu Christ" did not help us to get our water pump back. My wife and I discussed the events and decided to return the “Sanshu Christ” things to Jiang Erjie. My wife hesitated, but she eventually agreed with me. The next morning, after breakfast I returned the wall clock and the materials to Jiang Erjie.
But, unexpectedly, a disaster came.
That night, a rapid knocking on the door woke my wife and I. I lit up the lamp and put on some clothes. As soon as I opened the door, I heard Jiang Erjie calling out loudly: "Hao Zhiqiang is a "devil". “God” commands you to banish him to the uttermost depths of hell!" Just then a stick came at me and I didn't have time to dodge, only to feel a hot stream running through my cheeks, and then I didn't know anything... When I woke up, I found myself lying in the bed of the rural health hospital, with gauze on my head, a tube in my hand, and my wife asleep beside me. Later I learned that, I had been beaten by Jiang Erjie’s group, suffered serious head injuries and fainted from severe blood loss. Luckily, leader Wang of the production team heard our cry and came to help. He scared away Jiang Erjie’s group and helped to take me to the hospital.
I told the police in detail about how my wife was dragged into the “Sanshu Christ” group and how I was beaten. It was at that time that we learned that the “Sanshu Christ” was a cult. Jiang Guizhen and others have been taken into custody by the public security organs for suspected crimes. The case is being investigated and the law will punish them. I was in hospital for more than three months before the wound was basically healed. After returning home from the hospital, with the help of anti-cult volunteers and other warm-hearted people, my wife and I thoroughly understood the nature of “Sanshu Christ” and drew a line under the cult.
After all these years, my wife and I are still very afraid of it. A free clock nearly killed me. It's easy to get into the cult, but it's hard to get out. Please never believe in cults.
