The Tainan city government has decided to persuade Falun Gong protestors to leave a historic site where they have long maintained a presence. The city is concerned about the influx of Chinese tourists next month.

Last Friday, Chinese travel representatives traveled to the historic Fort Provincia in Tainan City. Fearing that the Chinese visitors would run into the protestors, officials moved the protestors  before having the representatives enter the fort from a side door.

City officials said that Falun Gong members have gathered in front of the fort for a long time, and have put pressure on the city's tourism. The officials said if their efforts to communicate with the protestors fail, they will consider further steps.

The Tainan Mayor has stated his support for freedom of speech, and some opposition Democratic Progressive Party city councilors have expressed concern about the city's handling of the Falun Gong members.
 
In 1999, China outlawed the spiritual practice of Falun Gong.
