My name is Shao Yongan. I’m the head of Town Garden Village of Nanzheng County of
Chen Jinhai, a 58 year old man, had a high school education. Once he had an enviable family of three but now he only has a son (married) left due to family tragedy. Do not underestimate his high school education background, because among the middle school graduates or illiterate villagers, Chen was regarded as highly intelligent by his fellow villagers. He used to work as an accountant and later held a rice processing plant as well as a section of fish pond. He took care of the plant while his wife looked after the fish pond. Even if this family was not rolling in money, they led a happy life that attracted admiration from other villagers.
One day in June 2004, while he was ready to close up shop after a busy working day of food processing, he suddenly noticed a yellow bag behind the door. Looked around, he did not see anybody else, so he kept the bag on the desk thinking that it might belong to some careless customer. To his surprise, nobody came to collect it after more than ten days and he couldn’t find the owner either.
One rainy day, there were few customers in the processing plant. Chen felt bored and decided to open the bag. Inside the bag, he discovered a book named Zhuan Falun and several leaflets. He was curious at that time and couldn’t help but start reading the book. Gradually he was attracted by Li Hongzhi’s teachings of “the highest rule of Falun Gong”, “Practicing the mind”, and “Be a kind person”. At the same time, he was obsessed with the illusion of heaven, full of golden houses and golden trees. Whenever he had time, he would study the book Zhuan Falun.
One month later came a man and a woman, Liang and Zhang. They talked to Chen mysteriously asking Chen whether he was reading a book. Chen admitted it and talked with them about his thoughts after reading Zhuan Falun. At last Liang said it was him who had left the book for Chen deliberately, thinking Chen was a kind person and would like to give him an opportunity which others may want to have but were deinied. Then he gave Chen some copied materials and told him to read them carefully as those were scriptures of the Master.
From then on, no matter how busy he was during the day, Chen would practice Falun Gong every night. Sometimes, he even practiced during the daytime when there was temporarily nobody visiting his processing plant. Gradually he turned all of his attention to practicing Falun Gong and started to ignore his clients. Sometimes he blamed clients saying their processing quantity was too little and he did not have time to look after it. He totally lost his passion for his business and let it decline dramatically without making any efforts.
In the past, he would go to his fish pond to help his wife after his processing plant was closed every evening. But since he started to practice Falun Gong, the days he went to the fish pond became less and less and later he stopped going altogether. Every night his wife would return home from the fish pond exhausted, only to see Chen sat there making copies of the scriptures or reading Zhuan Falun. His wife tried to persuade him not to believe in those fallacies but he insisted that Falun Gong was the ultimate rule and the whole family would benefit so long as he himself practiced it and that he would bring his family a happy life as if they were living in heaven. Also he always emphasized that he should have practiced it long before and now he needed to work even harder to get back this wasted time.
In November, 2004, Chen was only present at his son’s wedding in the morning and in the afternoon he went back to practice Falun Gong alone.
On a hot evening if August, 2005, Chen’s wife reminded him to add an oxygen machine to their fish pond. At that time she was lying in bed for days because of illness. Chen said, “You don’t have to worry. I am a Falun Gong follower. Even if all other people’s fish die, the Master will protect ours.” He never understood why, in the second morning, his fish pond had becaome a pond of dead fish. His years-long savings were completely ruined.
Due to overwork and the blow of losing the fish pond, Chen’s wife started to vomit blood occasionally. Relatives and friends advised Chen to take his wife to the hospital, but he said, “My wife’s illness is because of her karma. Ordinary hospitals can’t help. My Master will cure her. You guys had better keep away from my business.” In this way, he put off medical treatment for his wife and refused to take her to the hospital.
Finally Chen’s wife passed away during the Spring Festival of 2006 when other people were happily celebrating the coming of a new year. Until now, nobody knows what kind of disease his wife died of.
In April of 2008, he married another woman. His new wife cooked and washed for him diligently, which allowed him to devote all his energy to practicing Falun Gong day and night. Gradually Chen was found to be abnormal in mind. There were several times in the day that he asked his wife “why do you stay up so late?” Sometimes he laughed and cried, asked and answered questions to himself. He told others that the Master had possessed him and that now he had become an immortal person.
Chen Jinhai became absolutely insane in the year of 2009. He usually dressed like a monk, ran here and there with a rotten straw hat, a pair of yellow rubber shoes and wrapped his legs with puttee like the red army. One day he suddenly appeared in one villager’s wedding ceremony and knocked down their banquet tables. When he was hungry he would rob food from others. Women, old and young people of village were all scared of him and tried to avoid him. He became a totally different person. His new wife left him and went back to her hometown with a broken heart. His son dared not to keep him at home for fear that he might attack his daughter in law.
Due to practicing Falun Gong, Chen Jinhai ended up as an insane vagrant, exposed to cold wind and hunger.
