An associate professor of Suffolk University (Boston) Smirnov, Elie Wei published an article on February 10, 2013 describing his own experience of watching the performance of "Romantic Charm" and concluded that the Falun Gong had implanted political propaganda into the performances and these kind of shows more closely resemble mouse droppings than performance arts.

Professor Smirnov said that Falun Gong’s performance was not an artistic dance, but simply a dance without thinking. The actors are professional but it was just tasteless.

He wrote in the article that the performance of "Romantic Charm" is funded by the Falun Gong cult (very probably belong to Falun Gong) which was outlawed by the Chinese government. Professor Smirnov said that it didn’t matter who the financial backers of the performance were; there was no excuse for implanting cheap propaganda throughout the performance.

"The two actresses sing the “songs” with piano accompaniment about 'Red Devils', atheism and pseudo evolution (if they do not project the translation of the lyrics of the “song”' onto the screen, I would not have understand what they were singing about. And the reason I put the word “songs” in quotation marks is that each “song” is composed of four lines of words, repeated three times with the same melody!)." Professor Smirnov commented.

Professor Smirnov noted that there were 4 acts relating to political propaganda within the 20 acts of the “Romantic Charm” and he refers to these attempts at political propaganda as "mouse droppings."
