Canfangying is a beautiful village located beside the Guanting Reservoir in Huailai County, Hebei Province. The village is famous for growing peaches, apples and strawberrys. Local villagers live a prosperous life, but a tragedy occurred in this village. Chen Yunchuan, a local farmer, and four members of his family have died due to their practice of Falun Gong. From the family of six, only one has survived.

From left in the front: Wang Lianrong, Chen Yunchuan; from left in the back: Chen Aizhong, Chen Hongping, Chen Shulan and Chen Aili.

Chen Yunchuan was born in October 1939. He and his wife, Wang Lianrong, were local farmers and were both honest and kind-hearted people. They had four children together. Chen Shulan was their eldest daughter. Chen Aizhong and Chen Aili were their twin sons, and Chen Hongping was their youngest daughter. These four were also very good people and the whole family was living a happy life together.

Chen Yunchuan had been bothered by medical problems in his waist and legs. He began practicing Falun Gong in July 1997 with the intention of improving his physical health. As a result of psychological conditioning and regular exercise, Chen Yunchuan felt better after months of practicing. He attributed this to Falun Gong, and got increasingly obsessed before introducing Falun Gong to his wife and children.

Gradually, laughter could no longer be heard at their home. The whole family did not take care of their land and fruit trees anymore. Instead, they either stayed at home for meditation, or went out to exchange their experience with other Falun Gong practitioners. Their minds were occupied by ascending to higher levels and achieving consummation.

Falun Gong was outlawed by the government in 1999. Encouraged by Li Hongzhi’s direction about “Validating Dafa with Life”, the whole family travelled to Beijing seven times to participate in illegal activities such as “Publicizing Dafa.” Local volunteers tried to dissuade them from practicing Falun Gong, but their efforts were in vain. Chen Yunchuan and his family believed that the volunteers were devils interrupting their cultivation. They kept volunteers out of their home, and cursed at them..

As time went by, Chen Yunchuan and his family got increasingly obsessed with Falun Gong.Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Gong, claims that he can remove his followers health problems and instructs practitioners not to take medicine because illness is caused by karma and taking medicine returns karma into the body. Due to the length of time Chen Yunchuan and his family spent meditating, going out to “tell the truth” and their refusals of medical treatment, all of the family members were in deteriorating physical conditions. Chen Aizhong had kidney failure soon after he began practicing Falun Gong, but he rejected medical treatment. He died at his home on September 20, 2001 at the age of 33. Chen Hongping had heart failure not long after she began practicing Falun Gong. She also refused medical treatment and died at home on March 5, 2003 at the age of 32. Chen Aili, being so obsessed with Falun Gong that he believed he was possessed by the devil, left home on July 10, 2004 and died of heart failure at the age of 36. His body was brought home by two of his fellow practitioners on November 5, 2004.

The deaths of three of their children did not awaken Chen Yunchuan and his wife. They attributed the deaths to their children’s karma and their failure to practice diligently. In January 2005, the old couple left home to publicize and practice Falun Gong with aims to “eliminate karma”, “ascend to higher levels”, “achieve consummation” and to “ascend to heaven in the bright daylight.” While they were busy with practicing and publicizing Falun Gong, Wang Lianrong got hypertension and heart disease. Due to the lack of timely medical treatment, she died of a heart attack at the age of 65, when she was practicing Falun Gong on August 4, 2006.

After the death of his wife, Chen Yunchuan also had serious hypertension and pulmonary tuberculosis as a result of a long period of malnutrition and physical weakness. On the evening of January 11, 2009, he died from a traffic accident at the age of 71 when he was crossing the No. 110 National Highway on his way to Liujie Village, Langshan Town, Huailai County to publicize Falun Gong.

Chen Yuanchuan and his wife Wang Lianrong, who were supposed to enjoy their happy life, died miserably. Three of their children also died young. Chen Shulan, who married to Changping District, Beijing, is the only survivor from this family. Their house and yard were left untended. The house was very desolate, standing in sharp contrast with beautiful houses of their neighbors.
