I am Zhao Qingzhu. After I retired from the Bureau of Grain in the development zone in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, I lived in Jiaozhuang Village, in the Zhongyun Town development zone. My wife was Sun Xuexiang. She was born in May 1951 and lived at No. 34-1, Kangsheng Road, Jiaozhuang Village, Zhongyun Town.
My wife had chronic pancreatitis, and was mentally exhausted from taking medicines. She used to believe in supernatural beings and often went to temples to burn incense and pray to Buddha to get relief, both physically and mentally. One day in March 1997 a neighbor, surnamed Li, introduced Falun Gong to her and told her that Falun Gong was so magical that it could cure all diseases without medication. The neighbor also said Falun Gong followers could ascend to higher levels and could achieve consummation and become immortal. Her words not only satisfied my wife’s psychological need, but also aroused her desire to become immortal. Thus she followed the neighbor to practice Falun Gong.
My wife went to Jiaozhuang Primary School to attend group practice every morning, and followed other practitioners to do the Five Exercises of Falun Gong. On one day after the group practice, an instructor told my wife that she should not only practice Falun Gong, but also read teachings of Falun Gong so as to know more about higher-level principles and to cure her disease. My wife took the instruction seriously. She bought several books including Zhuan Falun and Explaining Content of Falun Dafa. She took learning Falun Dafa as her top priority, causing her to neglect her farm work and house chores. In the daytime, she read, copied and recited the books; at night, she wrote down her thoughts. She kept on doing such things relentlessly every day. As time passed by, what she read and learned changed her. She firmly believed in Falun Gong teachings such as karma, and dreamed of achieving consummation, ascending to higher levels, and becoming immortal.
My wife trusted Li Hongzhi’s philosophy of no pain no gain, and believed that what she paid in suffering would turn into her merit and virtue that would help her develop Gong. She bought a tape recorder with the little money she had put aside and presented the recorder to the practice group; she printed a large number of publicity materials and distributed them among her fellow practitioners; she emptied our storage rooms and invited her fellow practitioners to hold gatherings there. The instructor and her fellow practitioners praised her for what she had done, and she was pleased with herself for she felt that she was ascending to higher levels.
On July 22, 1999, Falun Gong was outlawed by the government. My wife was shocked and could not accept that fact. She asked me, “Falun Gong advocated truthfulness, forbearance and benevolence. It encourages people to do good things, and cures diseases for people. How could it be an evil cult? ”I told her to trust the government and to give up Falun Gong, but she did not accept my advice. Instead, she kept on practicing Falun Gong at home. Later her instructor told her, “Our master said that those who learn and practice secretly are controlled by devils and can not be enlightened. Only those who step forward to defend Dafa are great. ”Therefore, my wife defied the county’s laws and advice from family members. She joined other fellow practitioners to protest in front of the local government building. I had to go there to take her home.
My wife was so obsessed with Falun Gong that she forgot her duty to abide by laws and regulations. One evening in August 2001, she wanted to go out to distribute Falun Gong materials. I tried to hold her back, but she yelled at me in uncontrollable anger, “You are a devil! You are ruining Dafa. I am going to get rid of you devil.” Then she took a glass from the tea table and threw it toward me. I narrowly escaped the hit. I could do nothing but let her go because I felt that she had lost her mind.
One day in December 2003, I asked my wife to take lunch when she was meditating in the bedroom. She said she felt uncomfortable in her upper abdomen and she was eliminating her karma and told me not to interrupt her. I said, “You should not believe in the lie that practicing Falun Gong can cure diseases. Your disease can not be cured without medication.” She did not accept my advice. She responded, “My disease is a result of karma. I felt uncomfortable because my master was purifying my body. It is a good thing. I can endure it.”
My wife had a cousin who was working in Hengrui Medicine Co Ltd, and had some medical knowledge. When the cousin heard that my wife’s condition had deteriorated, she bought her medicines including proglumide and loxiglumide. She said to my wife, “You are really perverse! Your condition will further worsen if you do not take medicines.” My wife did not take the advice seriously and replied her cousin, “I am under the protection of my master’s Law Body. Nothing will happen to me.”
As had been predicted, my wife’s condition went from bad to worse about half a year later. In winter 2005, she felt a dull pain and bloating in her upper abdomen. I forced her to a military hospital. The medical examination revealed that she had pancreatic cancer. Doctors suggested surgery, bu t she did not believe in doctors. She said, “I do not need surgery. My master said surgery could only cure the superficial disease, but is of no use to illness in other spaces. Such illness is beyond the reach of modern medical science. ” The doctors had nothing to do but let her go home with some medicines.
After she got home, I took the medicine and water to her and asked her to take the medicine, but she still refused. I got angry so she attempted to comfort me, “You do not know the truth. My master said practicing can cure diseases, and all practitioners are forbidden from taking medicine.” She added, “As long as I keep on cultivating, I can not only cure my disease, but also achieve consummation and become immortal.”
On the evening of March 5, 2006, my wife’s condition deteriorated. I called a taxi and sent her to a local hospital, but it was too late. My wife died at the age of 55. Falun Gong took her life. What a tragedy!
