Agra: Uttar Pradesh police on Wednesday nabbed the Subhash Sena's number 2 man, after its leader Ram Vriksha Yadav, from his hideout in Basti, eastern UP, 13 days after violent clashes between the cult's members and cops in Mathura that left 29 dead, among them two officers.

Calling it a major breakthrough in Jawahar Bagh incident of June 2, police said Chandan Bose, 40, Yadav's trusted lieutenant and the man alleged to have shot station officer Santosh Yadav dead, was arrested from a village in Parsurampur along with his wife Poonam.

Senior officers said Bose, the "acting commander" of Swadheen Bharat Subhash Sena (SBSS), and his wife are prominent members of the cult that worshipped Subhash Chandra Bose and wanted the currency of India, along with posts of President and Prime Minister, to be abolished.

Talking to TOI, Basti superintendent of police (SP) Kripa Shankar Singh said Bose, who had been absconding for almost two weeks now, arrived at his wife's house in Parsurampur, Kaitholiya village, three days ago. He had a reward of Rs 5,000 on his head.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided Poonam's house around 6.30 am and nabbed the two, Singh said, adding that it was a joint operation by the Basti district police's crime branch and Mathura police.

Bose, who speaks fluent English, used to look after the SBSS's paperwork, including Yadav's court cases, and hails from West Bengal He claims to be a Bangladeshi refugee and runs a garment business in Ludhiana, Punjab. During preliminary interrogation, Bose -- he did his Class XII from Babulal Diwan higher secondary school at Raniganj in Bihar -- claimed he was not the one who killed Yadav, the SO of Farah police station.

Police also said that Bose has "accepted" he was associated with cult leader Yadav for the past several years and that he, along with his wife and two children, had been staying at Jawahar Bagh ever since SBSS encroached the park in 2014.

Bose, who suffered a fracture in his right leg while fleeing Jawahar Bagh during the violence, said he first went to his uncle's house in Delhi and was hiding there before coming to Basti. Maintaining that he was one of the financers for the 'adolan', he said the main contributor, however, was one Rakesh Gupta of Badaun. Senior police officers said efforts were underway to trace Gupta. They added that his alleged Naxal connections are also being probed.

Alok Priyadarshi, Mathura's SP, said both Bose and his wife are being brought to Mathura on transit remand for further interrogation. Besides Bose, 98 others have been booked on charges of murdering SP Mukul Dwivedi and Yadav. While seven people have been charged with arson and riots, 167 others from the cult are in prison for breach of peace.
