FBI Issues Warrant for Polygamous FLDS Leader Lyle Jeffs

Lyle Jeffs has fled custody after a judge allowed him to await federal trial from a Salt, according to sources.

The U.S. Attorney in Utah has issued a warrant for the arrest of Jeffs.

Sources in law enforcement are looking for Jeffs and have asked for the public's help in finding him, he's a fugitive now, said Sam Brower, a private investigator who's been closely following FLDS illegal activities for many years.

The FBI is leading up the investigation and, with the assistance of local and federal law enforcement. according to a press release issued by the agency's Salt Lake field office on Monday.

Thomas Jeffs, one of Lyle Jeffs' sons,who left the church two-and-a-half years ago,said his father should be assisted by his family or FLDS faithful.

Jeffs is among 11 people accused in a massive food stamp fraud scheme. was granted release from jail on June 9 . Conditions of Jeffs' release included home confinement, electric monitoring and no contact with witnesses, according to the court order.

The order allowed for Jeffs, who was to stay at a home somewhere in Salt Lake County, to leave the residence for doctors appointments, religious services and a job.

Lyle Jeffs is the brother of convicted FLDS leader Warren Jeffs,currently runs the secretive sect's branch in Hildale, Utah. Lyle and nine others were arrested in February and accused of diverting money from the federal food stamp program used at two FLDS-owned convenience stores to use as the sect's leaders wished.

The indictment, unsealed Feb. 23, 2016, alleges that FLDS church leaders used SNAP proceeds from authorized beneficiaries for "unapproved purposes." A large percentage of those living in Short Creek -- the area on the Utah and Arizona boarder made up of mostly FLDS members -- receive SNAP benefits amounting to millions of dollars each year, according to the Department of Justice.

The FBI said anyone with information on Lyle Jeffs' whereabouts is urged to call them at 801-579-1400.
