The Sun family, a family of four, lived in the Taidong Community of Huanggu District, Shenyang City. The couple is Sun Dekun, 66 years old and Xing Anmei, 59 years old. They had a son named Sun Yingnan and a daughter named Sun Yingying who are 25 years old. In the eyes of others, it is a happy family. Yet in reality, it is a mournful family.
Brainwashed by a Cult
At the beginning of 1990, Sun Dekun and Xing Anmei were introduced to each other and formed a family. The two had steady jobs, and their married life was not really rich, but very happy. At the end of 1991, Xing Anmei gave birth to a pair of twins, which made their relatives and friends envious. In order to create better conditions for the two children, Sun Dekun and Xing Anmei worked hard, hoping to get early promotion or pay rises. In order to improve the family’s economic conditions, Sun Dekun went to the morning market to sell fruit; after work, he went to the night market to be vendor. Sun Dekun often coughed due to overwork,.but as long he saw the two cute children, his fatigue would be removed.
Yet things were to change before long. In April, 1997, Xing Anmei, who was fragile after delivery, heard from her colleague that Falun Gong helped her to keep fit, so Anmei decided to try. She quit work for a period of time and went to practice in the park with her colleagues. Xing felt much better and persuaded her husband into practicing Falun Gong as well. After a period of time, Sun felt relieved and didn’t cough so heavily. The couple attributed all this to Falun Gong and became obsessed with it. From then on, Sun spent all his time on practicing the cult. The couple often asked for sick leave from work and even when at the workplace, they chanted Falun Gong slogans unil their colleagues were scared.
To improve level of cultivation, they forced the children into practicing the cult
In 1999, the state banned Falun Gong according to the law, which was difficult for Sun Dekun to understand. They secretly encouraged each other, saying “we must insist on practicing.” In order to improve their "level", they began attempting to secretly draw neighbors and friends into their practice. After being rejected, they even considered using their children. At that time, Sun Yingying and Sun Yingnan were only 9 years old, just at primary school. The couple immediately decided: they should no longer let their children go to school, but stay home to concentrate on practicing instead.
Sun Yingying and her brother dropped out of school for no reason and this attracted the school's attention. Their teachers and community staff visited Sun’s home many times, asking the reasons for why the two children dropped out. The couple used financial difficulty to cover up the truth. In order not to arouse the suspicion of others, they let their two children continue to go to school. However, every day after school, Sun Dekun didn’t ask their children to complete homework, but urged them to practice meditation and read scriptures.
Obsessiveness leading to abyss of despair
Nine years passed in a flash. Over the years, the children concentrated on practicing Falun Gong and seldom communicated with their classmates. The couple suffered severe asthma and cervical spondylosis. Yet they insisted that all was due to karma and refused to take medicine. Their conditions went from bad to worse.
Sun Yingying and her brother finished the nine years of compulsory education and after junior high they no longer went to school, concentrating on practicing at home. Beginning in 2008, Sun Dekun secretly distributed Falun Gong propaganda materials for the so-called "Dharma". The old couple spent all their pensions on computers, recorders, color printers and other equipment. With the help of friends, the family of four printed booklets and made discs at home during the day and in the evening they went outside to the district to distribute them. Discovered by the public security organs, they were given administrative warnings and had their printing equipment confiscated. Community volunteers went their home to do transformation work, but they refused them at the door.
Now, the couple’s savings have been drained by Falun Gong and their physical conditions have deteriorated further. Sun is frequently tortured by asthma and Xing has suffered a deformed cervical vertebra. The two teenagers, who seldom communicate with people, suffer from mental illnesses. Yet the four are still obsessed with the cult.
