Mr. Liu, 37, had a MA in medical science. He began to practice Falun Gong in 1994. He was a pious adherent of Falun Gong and practiced very hard. After some time he thought that his "celestial eye" had been opened and a "wheel of law" could be seen turning inside his abdomen. From then on, he firmly believed what his Master Li Hongzhi said and thought that everything in his life was directed by Li. From October 1998 he had a poor appetite. He thought that was the way his master was asking him to stop eating to increase his Falun Gong power. For three months in succession, he only ate once every few days, and sometimes only once a week. So he lost weight quickly and at last he only weighed 45 kg.
He was taken to hospital by his family members and was there diagnosed as suffering from dysphrenia. During his hospitalization, he was forced to eat some food. But he refused to take any medicine, because, he said, his master had told him that Falun Gong practitioners did not need to take medicine. He, as a disciple of Falun Gong, had to obey Li unconditionally, he said. So the doctor had to put the medicine into his food.
After two months he got much better and left the hospital. He still believes that his recovery was not the result of the treatment. Since he still practiced Falun Gong, he would have a relapse some day, doctors said.
