Wang Xiuying, a pharmacist, had lived with her family harmoniously in Qiqihar, Heilongjiang Province, before she started to practice Falun Gong in 1996.
As she suffered from hypertension, Wang had been receiving medical treatment. But she no longer had injections or took medicine after she started to practice Falun Gong.
According to her mother, Wang said that her Master Li Hongzhi had "dispelled karma" for her, so she did not need to take medicine. Wang also claimed that Falun Gong practitioners were able to go to the cosmos after satisfactorily finishing practicing, although her mother argued that their Master Li Hongzhi himself had not been to the cosmos.
As a result of her not taking medicine, Wang's hypertension got more and more serious. In May 1997, she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. Due to the delay of treatment, she lost the ability to walk and speak.
