Believing in Falun Gong “miracles”, Zhang Yulian waits beside her husband’s corpse for his “resurrection”

Zhang Yulian was born in 1938 and lives in East Shenliao Rd., Tiexi District, Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. She retired from the Shenyang Tractor Factory. Xu Xixian, her husband, was born in 1935. With deep love and accordance, they had a happy marriage known to many in the community. And their two considerate children, a daughter and a son, were all kind to them.

In 1995, Zhang Yulian felt lifeless and feeble for the lack of physical exercise after years of retirement. In the hope of living a longer life by improving her health, she started practicing Falun Gong on the strong recommendation of her neighbor.

After practicing Gong every day on the square with her neighbor for some time, she began to feel stronger and more energetic. She was delighted to have found a good way of exercising. After having attended the funeral of a friend, she began to seek the “Fashen protection” against death threat instead of simply improving her health as she had set out to do. Right then, the neighbor told her that practicing Falun Gong was very beneficial, and that as long as she remained kind and pious, her Gong powers would be unlocked and protect her from aging, or even bring her Ascension into Heavens where she could live in eternal blessing.

On hearing how wonders Falun Gong would do, she remained in a merry mood for quite a while with all her worries gone. While her husband Xu Xixian, a patient of hyperlipidemia with fatty liver, had been born with a poor constitution and got ill constantly. So she lost no time to recommend Falun Gong to her husband, boasting of its benefits by taking the exaggerated curing effect on herself as an example. With his conversion they became intimate partner not only in marriage but also in cultivating.

They discussed ways of speeding up the “elevation” and decided to set up a home-based cultivation group. They invited many fellow members home to practice regularly before the portrait of Li Hongzhi, and held “Fa meetings” on an irregular basis. So their Gong mates gradually began to view them as advanced disciples, and subsequently, Zhang Yulian was appointed assistant of the local Falun Gong assistance spot for her eloquence. She exulted at the improvement in cultivation and urged her husband to practice harder for an early possession of “Gong powers” to protect his health.

Ever since she had started cultivating, she had ailments occasionally such as headache, body pains, etc., but she never took any medicine, let alone seeing a doctor. Because of a strong resistance to ailments, she managed to recover most of the time, which she saw as because Master Li Hongzhi had purged her body of Karma.

But there had not been noticeable improvement in her husband’s health, let alone a significant one. Persistent practicing and learning Falun Gong had done nothing to alleviate his disease. If anything, it had only emaciated him by making his liver condition worse due to a lack of medical treatment and necessary nursing. A debilitated man with a sallow face, Xu Xixian often had difficulty finishing his meals. There were times when he implied to her the intention of seeing a doctor as the pains were too great to bear. With her enthusiasm for cultivation at the peak, she discouraged him from doing so and blamed him for lacking piety. She said to him with an edifying tone:“What you felt as being ill were indications of dark air coming out of your body, which showed that your human cells were being replaced by high-energy matters. Once your body is completely purified by Master, it would become an immortal Fashen that never degenerates. It was karma that made you uncomfortable, which infringes on your health when you are weak, and will disappear when you grow strong. Look how healthy I am! Maybe Master is giving you a test.” On hearing that, he felt ashamed for not being devout enough. Feeling just one step away from Consummation, he redoubled his efforts in cultivation, ignoring all the symptoms. While Zhang Yulian was wholly possessed by thoughts of cultivation, with all her mind filled with ideas of learning Fa and getting into higher levels.

After several years of practicing, Xu Xixian’s health had deteriorated further. He had been reduced to a skeleton and had difficulty walking steadily or climbing up the fifth storey without pausing to rest for many times. Despite all the distress, he was convinced that in addition to removing karma with the help of Master, he himself had to repay the karma made in previous lives. The conviction was readily applauded by his wife. Fully backed and encouraged, he believed even more firmly that distress of the body was the herald of Master Li’s “Fashen protection”.

Although barely noticeable at first, his long-neglected body ended up looking like a frog with a protruding belly caused by the ever worsening ascites. He experienced nausea, retching, difficulty in breathing and walking, with his complexion turning awfully sallow. But he was bullheaded in his refusal to see a doctor, take medicine or have injections. All he did in the hope of reducing the bulge was desperate cultivation including sitting in meditation, practicing Gong and learning Fa. Their children were appalled at the sight when visiting them. They urged their father to seek treatment in the hospital, but the parents were too stubborn to persuade. Denied any offer to help, their children were tormented by anxiety and care for their father, restless as two ants on a hot pan, helpless.

Long-time practicing had turned Xu Xianxian into an odd and dull-looking man with fixed eyes. His children were dumbfounded on hearing his remark that the world was but an inn for man’s flesh body, and sooner or later a cultivator would cast off the “vile-skin bag”.

Although knowing his health degenerating day by day, he was not at all worried, nor was his wife, for they thought that nothing bad would happen because they were protected by Master’s Fashens. Still, every day they burned joss sticks and kowtowed before the portrait of Li Hongzhi, sat in meditation and learned Fa, never breaking their procedure. Finally, over four years after Xu Xixian first gave up medicine, he couldn’t hold on anymore. In May 1999, Xu fainted at home after having performed a strenuous practice, and never waked up. He died at the age of 64.

However, Zhang Yulian refused to believe that her husband was dead. Having read Zhuan Falun for over a dozen times, she had not a slightest amount of doubt about what Li Hongzhi had said, “A person’s true life is the Primordial Spirit”, “From a high-level perspective, we find that when a person is dead, his Primordial Spirit does not become extinct”. The idea was deep-rooted in her mind: “A cultivator has many beings”. She thought that “the Primordial Spirit had but left the mortal flesh temporarily while her husband sat in meditation,” and the Primordial Spirit was still living and protecting his flesh body. Death was merely a false illusion to “ordinary people” in the secular world. Surely her husband would resurrect if only she could guard his body properly, because Master would help his Primordial Spirit return to the mortal flesh.

She did not feel panic at all, nor did she inform her children and friends of her husband’s death. She laid his body on the bed, changed a suit of new clothes for him, and put the book Zhuan Falun beside the corpse. Believing that Master’s Fashens would protect her husband’s mortal flesh and bring his Primordial Spirit back, she burnt joss sticks and kowtowed before the portrait of Li Hongzhi, reciting scriptures to pray for his resurrection. She burned incense to “Buddha” (portrait of Li Hongzhi) at midnight, believing it was the best period to bring her husband’s soul back by “receiving Master’s Gong powers” for the dead. For three consecutive days and three successive nights she guarded his body, and did not eat, drink, or even have a nap. Despite all her efforts, her husband did not wake up. Had her son had not come back home, she would probably have done many other things more ridiculous.
