On the morning of September 30, 2005, a murder took place in XiHuoXingTang village, Gucheng Township, Fucheng County, Hebei Province. Zhang Hailing, a Falun Gong practitioner, knocked her six-month-old daughter Liu Ruyi on the head with a brick, which led to the death of Liu Ruyi. It shocked local villagers that Zhang Hailing killed her young daughter in such a cruel and cold-blooded way.

Zhang Hailing was a female farmer who was born on April 6, 1968, Han nationality, with junior secondary education, living in XiHuoXingTang village, Gucheng Township, Fucheng County, Hebei Province. She formerly had a happy family. Her husband Liu Shilong was a hardworking and capable man. They had a cute and smart boy. In March 2005, Zhang Hailing gave birth to a pretty daughter. Zhang Hailing herself was industrious and thrifty in managing a household. She was a devoting mother and a caring wife. She also got well along with her fellow villagers. She enjoyed a admirable family with a son and a daughter.

In October 1998, Zhang Hailing was introduced to Falun Gong. She learned that Falun Gong was able to improve physical health, to eliminate karma, to cure disease without taking medicines or injections, which may help reduce medical expenses. Moreover, those who practice Falun Gong may be protected by law body of the master, and may achieve consummation and go to paradise. Fascinated by Falun Gong, Zhang Hailing decided to join group practice in slack season.

In order to ascend in cultivation as fast as possible, Zhang Hailing bought the book Zhuan Falun, cassette tapes on Li Hongzhi’s lectures and portrait of her master. She read the book, listened to the tape and sat in meditation everyday. She spent most of her time practicing and learning Falun Gong, while neglecting the housework, farm work and her kids at all. What she thought was to improve her cultivation and to become a immortal or Buddhist.

Her husband Liu Shilong got very angry with her since she cared nothing about their housework or farm work except practicing Falun Gong everyday. He often persuaded her not to believe those groundless things. But Zhang Hailing disagreed with him. She told her husband, “The whole family will benefit from my practice. When I become immortal, I will bring you and our kids to the paradise.” Liu Shilong was angry, but he could do nothing with her. Later Liu Shilong invited relatives of Zhang Hailing’s parents to help persuade her. But Zhang Hailing refused to take their advice.

In July 1999, Falun Gong was outlawed by government. Liu Shilong was happy because he thought it was time for Zhang Hailing to change her mind since the government had outlawed Falun Gong. But he did not expect that Zhang Hailing kept on her practice secretly at night though she said she would give up Falun Gong. She insisted that as long as she kept on practicing, she was able to ascend in cultivation.

In July 2004, Zhang Hailing got pregnant. Her husband and their neighbors advised her to stop practice and to take good care of herself. But she said, “I am nearly reaching the highest level. The secular affairs do not mean a lot to me. I want to achieve consummation and to follow my master to the world of law wheel.”

In March 2005, Zhang Hailing gave birth to a girl, who was named Liu Ruyi. The girl brought happiness and additional housework to the family. But the baby girl did not hinder Zhang Hailing, who kept on practicing Falun Gong at every night. Her husband was kept busy with farm work and housework.

On September 30, 2005, Liu Shilong got up early as usual and went to do farm work. Zhang Hailing looked after their children in their courtyard. When Liu Shilong came home at noon, he saw the bare bottom baby girl lying on the steering wheel of the tractor, while Zhang Hailing was trying to wrap the girl with diaper. Liu Shilong asked, “Why didn’t you dress the kid in such a cold day?”

Zhang Hailing answered, “I am cleansing her body.” Liu Shilong feared the baby may catch a cold, so he picked up the girl. But he found that there was a lump on the back of girl’s head and the left side of her head was swollen. Liu Shilong was distressed and asked how it came. Zhang Hailing answered it was caused by a bump. When asked how the girl bumped, Zhang Hailing did not give a reply.

Liu Shilong noticed the girl was in such a serious condition that she could not cry out. So he immediately sent the girl to Hengshui People’s Hospital. But the girl died since all rescue measures failed. Doctors said the girl died from injury caused by blunt utensil. Liu Shilong then reported the police, and the police arrested Zhang Hailing who was preparing to flee.

Results of medicolegal expertise revealed that Liu Ruyi died from brain dysfunction caused by skull fracture, subdural bleeding, subarachnoid hemorrhage and extensive contusion of brain tissue after she was hit by a blunt utensil on her head. When Zhang Hailing was asked why she killed her daughter, she answered, “I am trying to help her improve cultivation and achieve consummation with me.”

On March 5, 2006, The Intermediate People’s Court of Hengshui City, Hebei Province sentenced Zhang Hailing to life imprisonment for crime of intentional homicide [(2006) Heng Xing Chu Zi No. 11] .

Zhang Hailing, who was mentally controlled and defiled by Falun Gong, became a murderer and was sent into jail. Unfortunately, she has not yet felt regret for her ignorance.
