Wang Tianwen and his wife Li Chengbi were teachers at a village school. In the summer holidays beginning in July 1998, they started to practice Falun Gong. After that, Wang became unsociable and eccentric, and Li became insane. At a party to celebrate the New Year held on December 30, 1998, Li took off her clothes, and sang and danced madly. Wang turned down all suggestions to take his wife to hospital, but their son managed to get her to a mental hospital.
On April 1, 1999, the 55-year-old Wang committed suicide by hanging himself at the school. A note he left behind read, "When reading the letter, my son, don't be sad. I'm not so lucky to become an immortal. Many people have books written by the master, but this one is a precious one, because it was bestowed on me by the master himself. Now I give it to you and your son…. The will of the two of you is stronger than mine. If you two want to practice Falun Gong, you have to burn your bridges and be determined to practice it. You should join the local Falun Gong branch to practice with the group…."
