XuJianzhong and Chu Qiuxiangwas were an ordinary couple of farmers in Zhaosan Village, Development Zone of Bazhou City, Hebei Province. They were usually busy with farming but if they were not busy, they would go out of their village to be migrant workers. They had one son and one daughter, and lived a quiet and earnest life. Their parents were healthy. They should have been enviable in their village, however, after they began to practice “Falun Gong”, they couldn’t lead a quiet life anymore and were eventually separated by death.

The couple began to learn “Falun Gong” in 1997. It was said that “Falun Gong” could improve health and moral character. Thus, they began the practice as guided by their tutors, books and CDs. Due to their limited education and difficulty in understanding the terms such as “Ye”, “Fa”, “De” in the book, they went to consult a villager surnamed Guo after supper every night, leaving their children and parents back at home. After a period of time, their neighbor couldn’t understand their behavior and said to them, “It’s so dark outside. It’s not safe to leave your children and parents alone at home. What if a thief breaks in?” They answered, “Falun Gong will let us be stronger and bring us good luck. Thieves will not break into the houses of Falun Gong practitioners.” Their neighbor was confused and had nothing to say in reply.

In 1999, the Chinese Government banned “Falun Gong” according to law. Guo and several others quit “Falun Gong” from their own initiative. The couple asked why and Guo said, “The village leaders came to persuade us. The TV also said that “Falun Gong” is a cult. I will not practice it anymore.” The couple couldn’t understand, “We practice it very well and see nothing evil in Falun Gong. Why is it called a cult?” They continued to practice.

By 2007, the couple had practiced “Falun Gong” for a decade. They believed that it was the “master” and “dafa” which protected them from diseases and disasters. They chanted scriptures each day to thank the “master”. However, in others’ eyes, they were far from being normal. They spent a lot of time practicing “Falun Gong” instead of going out to work, thus reducing their income. Their two children had to go out to work and support the family after they graduated from junior middle school. They were so busy with practicing that they couldn’t take good care of their father. Sometimes they even forgot to cook and send food to their father who didn’t have enough food to eat and looked quite ragged.

In 2008, Wang Dexuan, a villager who also practiced “Falun Gong”, died of sudden cerebral hemorrhage because he refused to go hospital or have medicine after a stroke and practiced too hard. Relatives and friends tried to persuade the couple to quit “Falun Gong” and lead a normal life, but they said that Wang Dexuan died because his “karma” was too heavy. He became perfect after death.

In 2012, Chu Qiuxiang became unhealthy and often coughed without stop. She felt a tightness in her chest and couldn’t do as much farming as before. Despite this, she became more dedicated to practice and forgot about the time. Being ignored, their father moved to a little brick shelter in the field and was taken care of by his daughter.

In 2014, Chu Qiuxiang coughed more often and even coughed up blood. Her family and friends urged her to see the doctor, but the couple said, “Master says that every person has karma. Coughing is what master has given to help her eliminate the karma. It’s a good thing to cough blood because it means that karma has been coughed out. I will not go to hospital or have medicine. Otherwise the karma will come back.”

At the beginning of 2016, Chu Qiuxiang’s face became swollen, she had a fever, talked nonsense in bed, saying that “master is coming” “I’ll be perfect”. Seeing this, her family sent her to the Fourth Hospital of Langfang City immediately. The diagnosis was advanced lung cancer. The hospital suggested they go to Beijing for re-examination. They went to Beijing and the hospital there confirmed the diagnosis. The doctor said, “The disease became cancer because of delay. If the disease was discovered early and she received treatment, it’s quite possible that she would have been cured. Now it’s too late. Besides, practicing “Falun Gong” led to irregular diet, malnutrition, and weakness. The best chance for cure is missed.”

In March 2016, Chu Qiuxiang died of lung cancer at the age of 54. XuJianzhong finally realized the cult nature of “Falun Gong.” But it’s too late. His wife will never come back.
