A local court has rejected the dismissal of proceedings against a cult member for the sacrificial murder of her three-day-old baby in late 2012, after defense lawyer had argued that the defendant’s mental health made her unfit for trial.
Natalia Guerra Jequier is charged with infanticide of her new-born daughter who was sacrificed on a bonfire by father and sect leader Ramón Castillo, the local court of Quilpué concluded Tuesday.

The court finally rejected the request for definitive closure of proceedings put forward by Guerra’s defense lawyer on the basis of her mental health. It found evidence that Guerra was insane or deprived of reason at the time of the events inconclusive.
During the hearing, the court changed the precautionary measures, formerly preventive detention of the accused, to complete house arrest, recognizing that Guerra must be guaranteed the continuation of her ongoing psychological and psychiatric treatment.
Guerra gave birth to her child on Nov. 21, 2012 in Clinica Re?aca. The baby was never registered in the Civil Records — when this was discovered the Investigative Police (PDI) opened the investigation.
She is one of the defendants along with seven other cult members charged with different degrees of involvement in the death of the infant. The crime was committed in Colliguay in the Valparaíso Region of Central Chile.
