Ten years ago, first shot against Falun Gong by Chinese intellectuals

Editor's note:

10 years ago, on June 17, "Guangming Daily" published an article by Xin Ping -- "Alarm should always ring against pseudo-science - a topic raised by the book 'Zhuan Falun'", fired the first shot by Chinese intellectuals criticizing the Falun Gong. The publication was 3 years before Chinese government banned Falun Gong on July 20, 1999!

It is learned that the Xin Ping is the collective pen name of several editors and reporters. It means "the Press and Publication comment". Today, when we finally cast aside dust of the years and re-read this article, we can still feel its sharp insights and far-reaching foresightness. If at that time the whole country had been as alert and sober as the article, probably there would not have been the subsequent "Falun" chaos.

The publication of this article was a head-on bang for ambitious Li Hongzhi as good as the ambitious head-on. Falun Gong diehards were terrified, and held an emergency meeting in the 2nd Institute of Aerospace Industry Corporation. They were shouting "to fight 'Guangming Daily' to the end." They mobilized the followers to write more than 1,000 "letters from  readers" to "Guangming Daily" as a punitive expedition and created Falun Gong's bad precedent of wantonly attacking at all different views. It might be from this siege, Falun Gong tasted the sweetness and became more convinced of the magic weapon that "making trouble really works". So they dared to besiege some newspapers, radio stations, television stations every year which even showed slightist doubts with Falun Gong. And being finally blinded by self-interest, inflated, they gathered more than 10,000 followers to besiege Zhongnanhai, thus embarking on the road to total destruction in China.

We would like to recommend again solemnly, "the first Anti - Cult text in China", "Alarm should always ring against pseudo-science - a topic raised by the book 'Zhuan Falun'". In addition to our mixed feelings, we could not help but find our mind filled with deep respect for the author Xin Ping - Several ordinary journalists.

Alarm should always ring against pseudo-science
-- a topic raised by the book 'Zhuan Falun'

Xin Ping

Around 1992, a group of books publicizing feudal superstition and pseudo-science got into the market. It undermined the normal order of book publishing, and made a negative impact on the spiritual life of the public. This phenomenon has aroused great attentions by the management department and the community. The Deputies of NPC and CPPCC members wrote legislative proposals. Experts and scholars published articles. Press and publication administration dealed with the case seriously with effective measures and the correct guiding opinion, and produced obvious results. Especially, CPC Central Committee and the State Council issued "Some opinions on strengthening popularization of science and technology" and the National Conference on Science put forward the strategy "develop the country with science and education". Since then, good books, articles and programs has kept emerging, popularizing scientific and technological knowledge, disseminate the scientific thinking, scientific spirit, scientific approach and scientific method .

Science and pseudo-science is a pair of foes. The strifes between the pair began almost from the birth of human being. The history of human civilization, in a certain sense, is the history of struggle between science and superstition, real science and pseudo-science. Science prevails over superstition and pseudo-science again and again, leads human society to progress one step after another. Therefore, the promotion of the scientific spirit and fight against feudalism superstition and pseudo-science is a long-term task. Should the alarm always rings, in perseverance. Take the current book market as an example, though the good books popularizing science still dominate the market, the noise has not completely disappeared. There are still books disseminating feudal superstitions such as the geomancy, Suangua, etc. Pseudo-science books also appear in various forms. "Zhuan Falun", a book recently found in all kind of street book stands, is a pseudo-science book spreading feudal superstitions.

Compared to the pseudo-science books in the past, the book "Zhuan Falun" has stronger ideological color. The author precisely uses this point as his own "prestigious symbol." This book says: the current various kinds of Qigong are on the lower level of curing illnesses and keeping fitness, while Falun Gong is on the higher level, is "actually leading people to higher level." Well, how high could Falun Gong reach? Here is the author's self-trumpeting footle: Buddha and Laozi can at best study the issues of the Galaxy, and his Falun Gong is the rationale of the huge universe; Falun Gong has never been publicized in this period of human civilization, but had savored people extensively in a prehistoric period; The author "has once made detailed investigations" and discovered mankind has been completely destroyed for a total of 81 times, with only a few survived, left over from the original prehistoric civilization and lived a primitive life. They entered the next period, and multiplied in numbers and in the end there was again civilization. Therefore, the author's publicity of Falun Gong once again in the final lawless period is an opportunity appearing only once in millenniums. Falun Gong claims to be "supreme" in theory, then what is the effect in actual practicing? Let's read again at the author's boasts: The author "has inplanted" a "Falun" in the lower abdomen of a disciple. After a car colliding with the disciple, the disciple would be all right, "but a deep dent is bumped into the car"; The employees of a state-owned enterprises practices Falun Gong collectively, which results in harmonious interpersonal relationships, better mental outlook, and increased economic benefits.  Among all the books I have read, the arrogant footle in "Zhuan Falun" is unprecedented. The book babbling that sick persons should not go to hospital, because the disease reflects a sin in the past life, and the person should pay the debt in the present life. Going to hospital and seeing a doctor is refusing to pay debts, and would destroy the normal order of society. Another example: the author says, in the eyes of someone with "his celestial eye opened", he looks the book "Zhuan Falun" "glittering with bright lights, every word is the image of my body of law". It is really super than God!

We say that "Zhuan Falun" is worth notice, because it is actually a book officially published, and indeed after publication it confuses many people.  The publication of "Zhuan Falun" and its circulation once again reminded us that much remains to be done to oppose feudal superstition and pseudo-science. It is still an arduous task to popularize scientific and technological knowledge and strengthen the publicity and education of materialism. A sage once said, the popularization of pseudo-science is caused by swindlers and fools together. We hope that the people in the publication industry to further improve their scientific and cultural quality, and enhance their social responsibility for the sake of  rejecting pseudo-science books. We also hope that the readers enhance their ability of distinguishing the true from the false, do not bite the bait of pseudo-science, leave the pseudo-science with no market.
