Although 5 members of the Almighty God cult who committed the direful murder case in a McDonald restaurant in Zhaoyuan, Shandong province were brought to justice with the verdict of the People’s Court, the evil and atrocious nature of the Almighty God cult is still quite shocking. I congratulated myself on my timely escape from claws of the Almighty God cult.

My name is Zhou Xiaomei. I’m 38 years old this year. I followed my husband from Xinghua to Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, to work in 2000. After several years of hard work, my husband and I could afford to run our own small shop near the food market in our village, and my husband also took such jobs as installing electrical applications, all of which made us be able to start to enjoy our life.

My nightmare began in July 2012 when my cousin who worked in Nanjing came to visit us. She told us in a mysterious tone that the Doomsday on 20th December was coming, but a new Christ had already come into the eastern world to save mankind from the Doomsday, and this new Chris who was female this time after two rounds of reincarnations had a new name as well called “Almighty God”. She told me that as long as we became the believer of the Almighty God, our fate would be insured, our whole family could survive the doomsday, after which we would have whatever we want. At that time, I was bored to look after the shop during the off season and I was a little bit terrified about the coming doomsday, the saying of which was also spreading in the society back then. Driven by curiosity, I decided to give it a try and agreed to join the “New Christianity”. I signed my name on the application form brought by my cousin, and wrote a guarantee at my cousin’s dictation stating that I will never abandon my faith in Almighty God once I join, otherwise I’m willing to take any kind of punishment for my apostasy.

Only after I became a member of it did I gradually realize what the Almighty God was really about. This is a cult organization disguised as Christianity, claiming that the end of the world is coming where only believers of the Almighty God can be saved and the rest people who doubt or deny the Almighty God should die of lightning strikes. It also alleged many things such as that China would separate into many pieces, that members must wage a life-and-death struggle against giant red dragons and kill them all in the end with the guide of the Almighty God, and that members would establish a kingdom ruled by the Almighty God, etc. By brainwashing members with these ridiculous ideas, the Almighty God cult instigates members to despise the society and antagonize the government.

There is a set of hierarchical and well-disciplined system in the Almighty God cult. Contacts among cult members are made on a single-line basis and by pseudonyms instead of real names. Usually, only members in the same branch get together furtively to do self-brainwashing by talking about cult heresies, sing the divine songs, and dance spiritual dances. When members go out to lure new victims into the cult, they do it in exactly the same way as furtively as people do from a pyramid schemes organization. Newcomers are all those introduced only by members. Recent members must swear allegiance by writing a “letter of guarantee” to the cult, in which they promise that they will never disobey arrangements of the organization, never leave the organization, and never betray the organization, otherwise they will be cursed to die of lightning strikes and will be punished by organizational law enforcement teams. In the meantime, every single member must pay a tribute at fixed intervals. The Almighty God cult also peddles that everyone has sins, and it can only be mitigated by tributes, the more tribute paid, the cleaner the slate is wiped, thus one can spare sufferings in the next life, or even has a chance to step into the kingdom of God.

The fact that I was credulous to the doomsday theory and sin theory peddled by the Almighty God cult, and the threat made from within the cult organization that one without absolute obedience to God shall be killed by God made me naively assume the end of the world is coming for sure, therefore I often did self-brainwashing and preached the gospel with my cousin. In just a few months like this, I had no time for my family, I either asked my husband to take care our small shop or closed it, causing our business took a nose dive. With holding out on my husband, I also paid a tribute worth of nearly ¥20,000 which consisted of both the business profit and my private savings. When my husband found out there was nearly¥20,000 missing, he thought I gambled outside and quarreled with me for it nearly every day.

Later, I started to realize that the Almighty God might be an organization of scammers, because the so-called doomsday didn’t come and my cousin kept demanding tribute from me. As the government strengthens the publicity and education work on the nature of the Almighty God cult, my husband found out me taking part in the Almighty God cult activities and reported me to the local government. When my cousin learned that I had doubts about the Almighty God cult and desired to leave, she cursed at me by saying: “The day of reckoning is coming for you”. Later, she cut me off and disappeared without a trace.

In the first few days after I withdrew from the Almighty God cult, when staff in the sub-district office and relevant department knew that I looked troubled and restless because I was afraid of the coming of the reckoning day and any possible trouble from “law enforcement teams” of the Almighty God cult, they sent people to protect me at first, and then help us to settle down to a new residence. My husband accompanied me at home when he got time, or he took me out with him when he had to go out to work, and I could also be of assistance to him. With great help from all parts, finally, I’ve got out of the nightmare about the Almighty God cult.
