On March 29, 2013, Zheng Guifen, a villager at Tianmu Village of Tianmu Town, Lin’an City, Zhejiang Province, who was also the wife of Mr. Mao Kunlin, ran away from home simply because she believed in “Almighty God”.

Before being obsessed with “Almighty God”, Zhang Guifen used to be a good daughter-in-law and a good mother praised by villagers as she was a hardworking, thrift, smart, capable, benign and kind person who never made any trouble in the village.

In the peak tourism season, she and her husband ran a small tourism business called “Nongjiale Inn”, which is a little farm-based entertainment hotel for tourists. In the off-season, the couple made dried bamboo shoots or did various farm works. The family enjoyed a happy life and became more and more prosperous. In 2005, the family built a small fashionable “western style house”. Later in 2008, they bought an apartment in Lin’an City as the marital house for their son.

However, their good fortune went away as quickly as it came by. In 2009, dramatic changes happened to her family when she was bewitched by the poisonous fallacies of “Almighty God”. After believing in the evil cult, she became so obsessed that she vowed to “do her part” for the “God’s family” wholeheartedly.

“To do one’s part” is a term used by the “Almighty God” to fool its believers. To put it bluntly, it is a cruel deception to trick believers into handing in their money as “tributes”, recruiting new members by way of “preaching the gospel” and at last, abandoning their family and career to become unpaid labors for the “Almighty God” cult.

After running away from home, Zheng Guifen lived a miserable life, while her family members worried about her well-being all day long. Her husband Mao Kunlin told neighbors, “After more than 30 years of our marriage, she just quietly left without any quarrel or conflict. How could she behave as weirdly as that if she didn’t believe in ‘Almighty God’”.

Since the day Zheng Guifen left home, Mao Kunlin had been thinking about her, worrying that whether she could eat well, live well or stay well. Although Zheng Guifen told him that she was provided with sufficient food and drink by the “God’s family”, and that she would never get sick as a pious believer selected and blessed by “God”, Mao Kunlin was soberly aware of what she said were all lies fed by the cult. Ever since Zheng Guifen started to believe in “Almighty God”, all she did was to offer all the family’s savings as “tributes” to the “God’s family” without leaving a penny for family members. So, where on earth was the “grace” of the “God’s family”?

In fact, it has been stipulated clearly in the evil book The Word Appears in the Flesh of the “Almighty God” cult about the “consecration” to the “God’s family”, “All the tributes offered by believers to the God’s family, including money, goods and materials can only be used by nobody but priests and God. It will be deemed as an act of stealing if anyone else enjoyed these things. And those people will be regarded as Judas.”

It was not until 6 months later that Zheng Guifen returned home for that she already had no money left for food. Although Zheng Guifen stayed at home, her mind was still tightly controlled by cult fallacies, such as “respecting God”, “loving God” and “obeying God”. On July 15, 2014, she ran away from home once again.

Mao Kunlin explained, as the housewife, Zheng Guifen was in charge of safekeeping their family savings. Their savings was once as much as 30,000 Yuan from making bamboo shoots and taking part-time jobs. When his wife returned home in 2014, only 7,000 Yuan left. The rest had already been offered by Zheng Guifen as “tributes” to “Almighty God”. As to the last 7,000 Yuan, Zheng Guifen took it all with her when running away from home.

Ten months later, the son of Zheng Guifen’s elder brother got married. All her relatives looked forward to her coming back home for attending her nephew’s wedding. However, she didn’t show up to celebrate this happy day together with relatives because she had already cut all ties with her family.

After Zhen Guifen ran away from home, the life of the poor family became even more difficult. On the second day after she left, Mao Kunlin started to run the “Nongjiale Inn” business on his own again. However, all those regular customers, including those who kept visiting them for 7 or 8 years, would prefer to avoid coming and stop contacting with him as soon as they learned that his wife became a believer of the “Almighty God” cult. Additionally, as a result of being short of hands, Mao Kunlin had to eventually close his “Nongjiale Inn” in great regrets.

For reason that Zheng Guifen participated in illegal cult activities and disturbed social order, the government once took deprogramming measures on her, trying to help her out. However, out of its hidden agenda, the “Almighty God” organization intimidated and frightened her by saying that the government would arrest her, which made Zheng Guifen become more reluctant to go home.

One day, Mao Kunlin broke his leg in a tumble and was admitted to a hospital in Hangzhou. Zheng Guifen was so indifferent that she left her husband alone in the hospital and went to work for the “God’s family”, totally ignoring their decades love as a couple. Later, she did come to the hospital a few times, but she always left immediately after laying down some fruits, never asking about her husband’s injury.

On one occasion, Zheng Guifen said that she wanted to buy an electric bicycle. In fact, all she wanted was to make it easier for her to go to work for the “God’s family”. In order to stop Zheng Guifen from running away from home, Mao Kunlin hid their family savings from her. Unable to find the family savings, Zheng Guifen pawned all her gold rings and necklaces she once dearly loved for money. With the money she got, she bought an electric bike and ran away from home right away.

Zheng Guifen’s elder brother once came to visit her on the second day of the Chinese lunar New Year, and reprimanded her for her unreasonable behaviors. He even warned her angrily, “If you keep believing in ‘Almighty God’, I will not recognize you as my sister again.” However, such harsh words out of tough love failed to move her or make her come to her sense.

Because of Zheng Guifen’s obsession with evil cult, her daughter-in-law proposed to divorce his son several times. Knowing that her family was at the edge of collapse, Zheng Guifen was still unable to get rid of her addiction to “Almighty God”. She coldly told her son and daughter-in-law, “Divorce or not, it’s up to you. It has nothing to do with me. ”

In the end, her relatives’ efforts were wasted, and what left in their hearts were nothing but more pains.

Actually, harms had come onto Zheng Guifen’s family right after she started to join “Almighty God”. Mao Kunlin said that she kept asking other family members to believe in the cult together with her right at the beginning. Because no one followed her, she started picking a fight, leaving no peace to this family. Sometimes she even woke up everyone at home in the middle of the night and demanded them believe in “Almighty God” with her.

In 2012, Zheng Guifen annoyed nearly all her relatives, asking them to join the cult. She visited her elder sisters, younger sisters, cousins, and then his husband’s niece in turn. Although she failed to lure any one into the trap of the cult, her behavior cast a huge shadow on hearts of all her relatives.

In order to “do her part”, she would go wherever the God’s family arranged. She had been to Anhui Province and Jiangxi Province at her own expense.

Due to the ordeal inflicted by the “Almighty God”, Mao Kunlin suffered from many diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, etc. for a long time. However, what he really cared about was his missing wife. He always worried about his wife because she suffered from eye disease and vaginitis. Mao Kunlin told neighbors, when Zheng Guifen stayed at home, it was medicine that cured her fevers, but she thought it was her faith in “Almighty God” that cured her.

Her son said angrily, “It seems that only ‘Almighty God’ is her true family instead of us. I almost get divorced because of her. But she insists it has nothing to do with her, it’s all our own fault.”

The mixed feeling of love and hate has made the whole family suffer tremendously. On the one hand, they deeply love and miss Zheng Guifen who has disappeared without any trace. But on the other, they bitterly hate “Almighty God” for stealing their beloved one and breaking their happy family.
