A tragedy of "ascension in broad day light" (photo)

On the morning of December 27, 2010, people were strolling along the river by twos and threes near the Daban Bridge in Mingshan County, Sichuan Province, while an old man sat cross-legged in meditation in the bamboo woods at the end of the bridge. At 10:22, the old man suddenly stood up, walked up to the middle of the bridge, then stood still looking up at sky with opened arms, and at last jumped over the guardrail more than one meter high down to the river. People cried out in fear at the scene, and some called the police right away. Very soon both sides of the river were swarmed with lookers-on.

Before long the police arrived and found an identity card and retirement certificate in the pockets of the dead man who was proved to be Wang Fucheng, a retiree from the Ya'an Branch, Agriculture Bank of China. Passers-by from Shuanghe Village in the west suburb recognized Wang Fucheng and said that he did live in the village and had been persisted in practicing Falun Gong.

Wang Fucheng, born in 1940 in Mingshan County, retired in 1995 from the Agriculture Bank of China with substantial retirement salary. And in the following year, his wife Yu Hongzhen also retired from the local silk mill. The old couple was tired of the noisiness in the town and bought a small yard in Shuanghe Village of Chengxi Town in the county's outskirts. With retirement salaries of about 3,000 yuan a month, they raised some chickens and ducks, grew vegetables, and sometimes gathered together with friends playing Mahjong. Their retirement life was fairly easy and comfortable.

In 1997, Falun Gong was spread to Mingshan and lauded by a lot of people as something miraculous, which, however, failed to impress the old couple at the beginning. Later Yu Hongzhen, who once worked in the silk mill, suffered from occupational diseases such as strain of lumbar muscles and rheumatism for a long time, joined the practitioners with an attitude of "having a shot at it". She participated in group activities in the daytime, and practiced Falun Gong following the instructions of compact discs at night. She kept doing this for a while and it seemed that her conditions were getting better. Gradually she deemed the doctrines of Falun Gong as truth and stopped her once-a-week physical therapy. Wang Fucheng, deluded by Falun Gong's allegation of "curing diseases" and "Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance", also joined his wife. Since they lived in the countryside and all their children were far away in Chengdu City, the provincial capital, their courtyard soon became a place where practitioners practice Falun Gong together.

However the "good" times did not last long. By 1998, Yu Hongzhen's pains in waist and two legs did not ease at all, and her rheumatic arthritis worsened as a result of practicing Falun Gong. Yu found it difficult to take a long walk, not to mention practicing and sitting in mediation.

Wang Fucheng firmly believed that the torture his wife suffered was the process of "removing Karma," which, as the "Master" had mentioned, was also the "important test" to achieve "Consummation." So they must persist, and all they needed was perseverance. The neighbors advised Wang to take his wife to hospital time after time, but he told them so long as they could cultivate into real Dafa disciples, they were free from any disease even without medicine or injection. He said his wife's suffering was repaying a karmic debt, which was predestined by the human cycle of death and rebirth, and it was disrespect to the Master and would bring punishment on his wife if seeking medical help.

Each time their daughter and sons called them from Chengdu inquiring after their conditions, they would just give a pat answer. In the summer, their daughter Wang Hui came back home several times after receiving their neighbor's telephone call. Meanwhile Yu Hongzhen was confined to bed, too sick to turn over, and groaning with pain. The daughter implored her father to send the old lady to hospital, and was rejected by both the father and the mother. Wang Hui asked some neighbors for help trying to send her mother to hospital, which was obstructed by Wang Fucheng in every possible way. Yu Hongzhen even wailed and screamed: "Master Li, I'm sorry! Sorry!" Finally Wang Fucheng pushed everybody out of the yard and shut the door. Wang Hui begged her father repeatedly, but to no avail. Father and daughter parted on bad terms.

In the Spring Festival of 1999, their eldest son Wang Xianqi came back home and tried to dissuade his father from practicing Falun Gong. Bewitched by the heresies of Falun Gong, Wang Fucheng refused to talk about the issue, tried every means to elude his son and only met him twice during the whole festival. Wang Fucheng threatened to sever ties with anybody who tried to stop him. His son had to take his mother to the provincial capital Chengdu without the father's knowledge. Yu Hongzhen waged a violent struggle and even today, a scar from her bite is still on Wang Xianqi's arm. She stayed with her son in Chengdu since then, and did not come back to Shuanghe Village even after her husband's death.

In July 1999, Falun Gong was outlawed by the Government, but Wang Fucheng still refused to come to his senses. Hiding by day and coming out at night, he and other fellow practitioners continued their cultivation activities. There was a Ksitigarbha (Dizang, also called Earth Treasury) temple around corner of the east street. Wang gave himself a shake and suddenly became abbot of the temple, claiming he was a living Ksitigarbha Buddha and a disciple in a direct line from Master Li Hongzhi. Bit by bit Wang Fucheng acted as a lunatic for his obsession with Falun Gong and was called "Lunatic Wang" by fellow villagers. He always told others that there was a Falun (law wheel) in his hand which could be replicated to numerous ones, and any disease could be cured as soon as one such Falun was attached to a person. The other villagers just stayed well away from him. One day, to prove that he was under protection from Falun and even wild animals would obey him, he caught a wild dog by its tail, only got bitten by the beast on his foot. His shoes were befouled by blood, though he claimed that he felt no pain at all. His daughter and sons came back several times trying to bring him to Chengdu, but he refused obstinately.

On December 22, 2010, in a letter to his wife, Wang Fucheng said: "I have finished reading Towards Consummation. These days, before my eyes always appears the golden Buddhist idol of Master Li who shines with dazzling lights and even the pillars behind him are in gold color. I assume I'm about to reach Consummation."

On December 27, 2010, after sitting cross-legged in meditation for more than two hours, Wang Fucheng jumped down into the river and consequently brought an end to his life.
