Overseas organs and groups say 'no' to Falun Gong in 2008

1. Falun Gong not welcome at festivities (February 10)
Falun Gong would not be allowed to take part in the festivities for the Year of the Rat, which began on Thursday in New Zealand and other countries and will last for two weeks.

2. 22 Falun Gong members arrested in Thailand (February 14)
22 Falun Gong practitioners in Bangkok were arrested over the Chinese New Year. Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Tharit Charungvat said he had no knowledge of the incident. "But if these people violate Thai law, the authorities have to enforce the law."

3. Falun Gong exhibition in Israel shuttered in advance (March 11)
Israel's Tel Aviv University removed an exhibition on the meditation techniques of the Falun Gong movement, which was removed more than a week ahead of schedule.

4. Falun Gong cries foul over stricter entry regulations (March 28)
Last month the Falun Gong in Hong Kong lost a judicial review, appealing against the Immigration Department's refusal to allow hundreds of its Taiwanese members into Hong Kong during the 10th handover ceremony. The judge had ruled it was a one-off incident and was not a result of religious discrimination as argued by the group.

5. Falun Gong detainee protests on Villawood roof (May 27)
Two Chinese men, one of whom is believed to be a Falun Gong practitioner, have climbed onto the roof of Villawood Detention Centre in a desperate bid to avoid deportation back to their homeland, sources from Australian Sydney Morning Herald and AAP on May 27.

6. New York's Chinese outraged at Falun Gong (June 15)
This cult has been going to Chinese communities in New York City with banners attacking the Chinese Communist Party. Falun Gong members have been alleged to discourage contributions to earthquake victims. Hundreds of thousands of Chinese people live in New York City. Many are outraged at Falun Gong's activities and have confronted the cult in Manhattan's Chinatown and in Flushing, Queens.

7. Falun Gong loses appeal of ban from parade
A state appeals court has upheld the right of the San Francisco Chinese Chamber of Commerce to exclude the Falun Gong spiritual group from street fairs related to the chamber's annual Chinese New Year Parade in the city.

8. Sign praising Falun Gong coming down (September 23)
City code allows "ideological" signs no larger than 6 square feet in a residential zone. Bao's sign at her home appears to be nearly 20 feet long and perhaps 4 feet wide. City officials received complaints and on Sept. 11, a letter arrived at Bao's house at 22 N. Prospect St. ordering her to remove the sign and threatening fines and legal action if she refuses.

9. A Falun Gong radio station in Indonesia to be shut (October 30)
The provincial Broadcasting Commission (KPID) and the Batam Frequency Monitoring Agency will close private radio station Era Baru for criticizing the Chinese government in October.

10. Falun Gong protesters lose trial bid
In 2006, the city filed a petition seeking to dismantle the protest signs and a small shed outside the Granville Street consulate that have been in place since 2001. Falun Gong protesters outside Vancouver's Chinese consulate have lost a second bid to get a full trial on issues surrounding the city's attempt to remove their protest camp.

11. Falun Gong group banned from parades
Fears the Falun Dafa marching band will hijack the Auckland Christmas parade have seen them banned from the event again. The Auckland Children's Christmas Parade Trust has refused the band's application, saying it won't have a "family occasion hijacked." Besides, Panmure parade also rejects Falun Gong.

12. Falun Gong follower's rights not breached by deportation: court (December 6)
A follower of the Falun Gong religious group and a failed asylum seeker did not have his human rights breached when Russian authorities deported him to China, the European Court of Human Rights ruled in December.
