Soon after "Democratic Movement" element Yan Jiaqi wrote an essay supporting the heretical cult "Falun Gong," Gu Jian wrote another article on the subject. Posing as a judge, Gu tore apart both Yan Jiaqi and the Chinese Government. He blamed Yan for "falling into the trap of the Chinese Government on whether the government is entitled to define a cult, saying that "a government has no right to define any religion as a cult." We draw the conclusion from Gu Jian's essay that he has not made it clear whether "Falun Gong" is a religion or a cult. It can be seen from this that Gu Jian, who is an expert on the ancient sages, is conservative and talks nonsense.
We must tell Gu Jian that "Falun Gong" is not a religion. It usurps the definitions of religion and engages in anti-religion and anti-science activities. The Chinese Government has the right to eradicate this cult which endangers society in the name of religion. It is out of place for anyone to make carping comments.
Attention, please, Gu Jian. A cult is an illegal organization, which distorts religious doctrines, is involved with superstition and endangers society. As an evil force rather than a religion, it is characterized by creating and spreading rumors and fallacies, deceiving the masses, resisting the implementation of state laws and administrative regulations, disrupting the order of social administration, and engaging in such illegal activities and crimes as endangering national security and the people's lives and property. Which of these characteristics does not hit right at the vital parts of "Falun Gong"? Isn't "Falun Gong" an out-and-out cult in all respects?
First, Gu Jian must know that orthodox religions worship gods such as the God of Christianity, the Buddha of Buddhism or the Supreme Master of Taoism. The preachers, who are simply servants of the gods and not gods themselves or the embodiments of gods, do not let their followers worship them as gods. Li Hongzhi, however, plays the part of the world creator and dominator, as well as the Savior. Raving that it is he who has delayed the destruction of the earth for 30 years, he obviously has wicked political ambitions.
Second, Gu Jian must know that a religious doctrine, besides stressing blessings in Heaven, attaches importance to the consolation and encouragement of people in their real lives. To some extent, this may help to stabilize society. Li Hongzhi and his "Falun Gong" organization, however, preach the so-called doomsday theory, creating a horrifying and tense atmosphere, and disrupting social order. For the past few years, Li Hongzhi has been inciting his disciples to create disturbances, from which we can clearly see his true features as a cult leader who aims to disrupt society.
Third, Gu Jian, who is an expert on the teachings of the ancient sages, certainly knows that a traditional religion seeks to adapt itself to society, and actively advocates serving society and benefiting mankind. Its preachers neither endanger the basic rights granted by the Constitution and laws to their disciples, nor threaten to use force on their disciples. They simply expostulate with them. But the "Falun Dafa Research Society" brings its practitioners under control by means of deceit and terror. It cheated its practitioners into the belief that gathering at Zhongnanhai meant practicing "Falun Gong" at a higher level, and that if they did not take part their progress would be retarded. It coerced many practitioners into creating disturbances against the media and government offices. This culminated in the illegal gathering at Zhongnanhai on April 25, 1999.
Finally, Gu Jian should be aware that a traditional religion does not aim to overthrow the political order and establish a theocracy, but seeks to cooperate with the political power and play an auxiliary part as a non-governmental organization in social life. Li Hongzhi repeatedly claims that he does not engage in political activities, but it can be seen from many facts that he has been conspiring to engage in political activities. At present, he associates abroad with the "Democratic Movement" and "independent Tibet" elements, as this writer has noted in other articles.
The aforesaid four points fully reflect the most fundamental characteristic of "Falun Gong," which is a cult, as opposed to a religion or a religious sect. Essentially violating the doctrines of traditional religions, it is anti-social, anti-governmental, and greatly harmful to society. Naturally it has been banned by the Chinese Government, and is detested by the broad masses and religious circles.
In conclusion, this writer wants to remind Gu Jian not to blindly follow Western ideas but to make more research into China's national conditions. The Chinese Government will firmly crack down on the "Falun Gong" cult, a worldwide malignant tumor, in accordance with Chinese laws as well as regular international practices.

The prejudiced and conservative Mr. Gu Jian
