[Editor's note] January 17, 2008, Istari posted this thread on a forum of Graffe's Wizard Compilation to describe how Falun Gong members pull people to attend their so-called "religious service" and how others reject Falun Gong.
So I was walking down the street at around 2:00 in the afternoon in front of a major elementary school when a woman comes running up behind me.
"Mister! Mister!" she yells in Chinese.
I stop and look down at her, notice her clutching little Falun Gong cards in her hands.
"We're having a religious service around the block, do you want to come?"
My survival instincts kick in, "Sorry I don't speak Chinese", I say in English.
Disappointed, she walks off.
I get ten feet down the road when ANOTHER one runs up behind me.
I look at her. "Can you speak Chinese?" she asks, using the Guomindang word 'National Language'. This is peculiar, if anyone approaches you they never ask if you can speak Chinese, they will try in crappy broken English.
"Some", I lie, debating whether to say I am French. She goes on:
"Oh! We have this religious service around the block, would you like to come?'
No thanks, I say. I start to walk off.
One truism about the Chinese people, including Taiwan, is that they walk very slowly. Some Westerners have observed that glaciers move faster, exacerbated some by Bush's policies. I walk faster than most of these people ride a bike, and that's still slow by NYC standards.
So she is running up next to me like a boston terrier wanting a treat.
"Would you like to come to our religious ceremony?"
I say no.
She repeats this 3 times, I say no three times. Out of breath from running up behind me, she gives up.
