Zhang Guiying, with only a primary schooling, lived in Jianshe Village in Ulanhot City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. She and her husband earned a living by farming and renting land. They had two children who had grown up, working in other places. While their family wasn't wealthy, they led a relatively peaceful life. Later, her husband developed asthma and couldn't continue working on the farm. And with the increasing age, Zhang Guiying’s health also started deteriorating, and her heart and blood pressure became abnormal.

One day in July 2012, while Zhang Guiying was in the town for a fair, she met Wang Xiulan from the same village. When she returned home, Xiulan invited Guiying to her house for a chat. As they discussed their health, Guiying signed, “My husband and I are all getting sicker, and we can’t sleep well at night. Our children are not with us.” While talking, Guiying started crying. Xiulan then took her to the inner room, where Guiying saw a white flag with a red cross painted on it. Xiulan told her, “I’ll lend you a book called ‘Compassionate Mother’s Love’ to read, and you should consider joining the ‘Three Redemption of Christ’. It teaches you to be a good person. As long as you eat only 100g of grains per day and sincerely pray, you won’t need to take medicine or get injections, and your illness will be cured. It will also bring benefits to your family.” Xiulan mentioned some examples of people with serious illnesses who had joined the “Three Redemption Christ”, also known as the “Disciple Society” and were cured without medical treatment. Faced with the struggles of her illness, Guiying was intrigued by the idea that she could be healed through “prayers” without going to the hospital, so she took the book home.

When she got home, she shared the story with her husband, but the man didn’t pay much attention to it. Guiying started praying regularly and felt a slight improvement in her health. She slept much better at night. She thought, it was all because of her faith in the “Three Redemption of Christ” and the blessings from “God”. Little did she realize that it was mostly a result of psychological suggestions and the regular life she recently had lived. Guiying became even more convinced that “Three Redemption of Christ” would heal her. Xiulan took advantage of it and advised her, “To continue improving your health, you need to buy more books and flags, and you must eat only 100g of grains per day.”

To demonstrate her devotion to “God”, Guiying used the money she saved by cutting down her own daily expenses to purchase a lot of books like “The Glorious Spiritual Journey,” the “One Hundred Spiritual Songs” and the “Three Redemption of Christ,” as well as many cross flags. At home, she set up a special prayer area with the cross flags hanging on the wall. From then on, she knelt down and prayed in front of the cross flags three times a day. After each prayer, she would hide in her home and read those books.

After another six months, Xiulan demanded that Guiying not only continue praying but also go out to “spread the gospel”, collect “spiritual food”, and contribute “dedications”. She claimed that by doing it, Guiying could receive more “blessings”. From that moment, Guiying started going out every day to “spread the gospel” to neighbors, relatives, and friends, extolling the benefits of “Three Redemption of Christ”. She stopped cooking, believing she only needed to eat 100g of grains a day, and she also refused to take any medication. As the result, her blood pressure continued to rise, and she occasionally experienced dizziness. However, she thought it was because she was not devout enough, or her “dedications” being insufficient. So she increased her “dedications”. Her husband tried to stop her, but she not only didn't listen but also got angry, arguing that he was being disrespectful to “God”. She even threatened to die if he insisted. Helplessly, her husband had to leave her like that.

In 2013, their fields were so overgrown with weeds that there was almost no harvest. The old couple’s illness was becoming more and more serious, and their residence was in a completely mess. The pension they had painstakingly accumulated was secretly taken by Guiying to do “dedication”.

Guiying was obsessed with fallacies of the “Three Redemption of Christ”, totally ignoring family responsibilities, their health problem, and the family’s economic situations. One night in May 2014, Guiying suddenly collapsed, and her blood pressure soared dangerously. With the help of their village director, her husband rushed her to a hospital. She was diagnosed with a cerebral thrombus caused by high blood pressure. Although her life was saved, she missed the optimal time for treatment, resulting in partial paralysis. Lying on the hospital bed, Guiying, who firmly believed in “Three Redemption of Christ”, did not feel repentant. She was thinking that, maybe she was not devout enough in her “dedications” and in “spreading gospel,” and that in the future, “Three Redemption Christ” could cure her. Meanwhile, on the other side of the sickroom, her emaciated husband, weighing less than 80 pounds, began to cry, and the village director was trying to persuade and comfort him.

After her release from the hospital, local anti-cult volunteers frequently visited their home, providing information about the characteristics and the dangers of “Three Redemption of Christ”. At first, Guiying still believed she had done too much evil things in her previous life, and that’s why she was punished by “God.” However, the volunteers continued to come to their home, cleaning their rooms and windows, doing laundry, providing psychological counseling, and actively helped them deal with difficulties in life. After six months of hard work, Guiying, who had been bedridden for such a long time, finally woke up and burst into tears, crying, “If it wasn’t for your help, I would have died, and I will never believe in their cultic teachings”. She also asked her husband to burn all the books related to cult, and permanently broke off the ties with “Three Redemption of Christ”.
