BEIJING, Oct. 14 -- Situated in the eastern part of China's southern Guangdong Province, Dapu is a small town belonging to the Meizhou County of Guangdong. In ancient times, Dapu was called Wanchuan, which literally means a town that was entirely encircled by mountains and rivers.
Most of Dapu's 500,000 residents are of the Hakka ethnic group. Although Hakka people are among the most conservative in maintaining their life and cultural traditions, they are also known for their readiness to take risks and seek new opportunities abroad.
Isolated from modern society for so many years, the buildings in Dapu have changed little for decades. White and green tiled houses can be spotted over the valleys, together with bamboo, banana trees, farmyard animals and kitchen smoke. There is a grey stone road that runs through the ancient town, stretching its way to an old dock. Walking down here one can see native vendors selling all kinds of local products like tobacco, herbal medicine, bamboo chairs, and freshly-picked vegetables.

Hechun Dock is located at the end of the town where ferries emerge on the clear and green river. A forest of bamboo lines the opposite side of the river, forming a quintessential Chinese scene.
Dapu is widely known for its famous Hakka residential buildings. The tidy and compact layout represents the unique living conditions of the Hakka people and their harmonious laid back life style.
