After the World Expo 2010 ends in October, the Mexico Pavilion will be moved from Shanghai to Wuxi, a city in east China's Jiangsu Province, the Wuxi Municipal Bureau of Commerce said.
The two sides signed a relocation deal on Wednesday, Xinhuanet.com reports. Jorge Guajardo, Mexico's Ambassador to China, and Wang Guozhong, Wuxi's Deputy Mayor, attended the signing ceremony.
The Mexico Pavilion is not a single building but a 4,000-square-meter area covered in grass with hundreds of kites made of eco-friendly plastic.
Although kites originated in China, they are popular in Mexico. They represent the idea of flying and are the strength that unites the Mexican and Chinese cultures, said Eduardo Seldner, Commissioner General of the Mexico Pavilion.
As part of the agreement, Wuxi Day will be held at the Mexico Pavilion during the World Expo to introduce the city to visitors from both home and abroad, the report said.
There will be as many as 42 foreign pavilions at the Shanghai World Expo, most of which will be demolished after the international gala ends on October 1. Pavilion designers have managed to use plenty of recyclable materials in building the structures to avoid polluting the environment when the buildings are torn down.
But many people still believe it would be a pity if the pavilions are all dismantled after the World Expo. Municipal officials in Wuxi hope to get other foreign pavilions to add some new attractions to the city. They have contacted nine nations regarding pavilion relocations. Their deal with Mexico to relocate the country's pavilion was the first successful case.
