Falun Gong also draws the attention of experts in the fields of international religions, cultic studies, psychology, and medical science. Some institutes and colleges take up Falun Gong as a research topic.
● Ph.D. Margaret Thaler Singer, former president of the American Psychosomatic Society and professor on psychology from University of California, Berkeley: I think Falun Gong surely meet the criteria of being a cult by American or world standards. The leader has people instead of, you know, worshiping God or abstract principles, they worship him. I just have not seen that Falun Gong is a religious freedom issue. It makes Falun Gong visible as these years, one more of them, thousands of cults.
● James Randi, presider of James Randi Educational Foundation in Florida, USA: While this poses as a religious organization in very much the way that the Church of Scientology has chosen to do, it is a group based entirely on supernatural and pseudoscientific claims…This man (Li Hongzhi) is simply another scam artist, not worthy of the respect given him by his followers…After Falun Gong was banned in China because of its false, damaging, and dangerous teachings, Li Hongzhi and his followers here in the USA began organizing different activities to fight those they perceived as enemies, threatening or suing those who did not believe in them or who exposed their tricks. They took advantage of the false perception they had created that Falun Gong is a legitimate religion, and sought to obtain advantages granted religious organizations in this country.
● Rick Alan Ross, an American expert studying Falun Gong issues: Li Hongzhi, the founder and leader of Falun Gong also known as Falun Dafa, has been repeatedly described as "homophobic" and as a "racist"…Isn't it odd how the same man that claims he and his followers have experienced "persecution" in China and who protests human rights violations speaks with such hatred and intolerance about the human rights of others?
● Samuel Luo, an expert studying Falun Gong issues from San Francisco, US: Li Hongzhi is like a dictator in that group. On February 15, 2003, Mr. Li said to his followers: "Remember these words from the master. However I handle something is righteous, and those who doubt this are always wrong. The reason is that is the choice of the cosmos, the choice of the future." He is worshiped by his followers as the God. People think that Falun Gong is small, but the Falun Gong is not small. It's powerful, because they have a lot of money, it seems. And they have lawyers that are working for free for them. And they have been using that advantage to suppress their critics' free speech.
● Pasty Rahn, a scholar from University of California, Los Angeles: Falun Gong did destroy families, some practitioners refused to seek medical care after falling ill and died because of that.
● Yan Sun, a political science professor at Queens College: The great majority of Chinese here or in China find Falun Gong to be strange and do not identify or support them.
● Professor Bergin, head of the Russian National Research Institute of Religious Relation and Law: Falun Gong's attitude toward the Chinese government and other religious groups, its imputation and impact on traditional religious values, as well as what Falun Gong has done against himself, make me firmly believe that Falun Gong is an extreme cult organization.
● Professor Alexander Dvorkin, president of the Russian Association of Religious and Cultic Studies Centers: Falun Gong now is a worldwide cult group under the leadership of Li Hongzhi, headquartered in New York. It is not important where the Falun Gong practitioners live, for instance in China, France, the United States or other countries. As far as the Falun Gong practitioners are concerned, they do not belong to any country, they all belong to Falun Gong group. First of all, they have attached themselves psychologically to Falun Gong group, they regard Li Hongzhi as their president or emperor and act entirely in accordance with Li's will. For them, all Li Hongzhi's instructions are compulsive and obligatory, which must be executed in time, and without any hesitation.
● Ming Xia, a political-science professor at the City University of New York on Staten Island: They (Falun Gong) know how to play politics with American elected officials. Falun Gong "Janus-faced," saying it presents itself in China as a moral-revival movement, but in the West as a movement for freedom of religion and thought…Epoch Times indicates a part of the Falun Gong strategy to embed itself into the large civil society for influence and legitimacy.
● David Ewing, China commentator: Falun Gong seems to be emerging as the largest anti-communism group in the world now.
● David Ownby, a Chinese-history professor at the University of Montreal: Li Hongzhi shares no common background with our Enlightenment heritage and its emphasis on the individual, on acceptance of difference.
● Daniel Marchiaz, director of US multi-media company Rocky Canyon, former member of a cult, priest: Falun Gong might go even farther than US cult organizations. That Chinese government banned Falun Gong does not mean there's no religious freedom in this country.
● Paul Crouch, president of US Christian Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN): I approved the opinion of categorizing Falun Gong as a cult. It seemed that what Li Hongzhi advocates have nothing in common with the teachings of the Bible in respecting the government and in observing the laws.
● Professor Hobson, who engaged in physics teaching and research in University of Arkansas, USA: Falun Gong is a cult of pseudoscience and superstition, posing potential threats to society.
● Huang Keqiang, chairman of Lin Zexu Foundation of USA: Falun Gong is as vicious as the drugs.
● Crescent Chau, president of Chinese Press Eastern Inc.: (1) Falun Gong claims to be a practice group without any organizations; but in fact it has established a huge propaganda system including newspapers, TV stations, and websites. It also holds demonstrations and activities constantly. The saying that it has no organized systems doesn't hold water. (2) If Li Hongzhi's words "Falun Gong does not accept donations" were true, then where does the huge fund come from? Why do they spend such amount of money for? (3) Falun Gong set against the Party and the Chinese Government under the camouflage of religion and cultivation; it is getting clearer and clearer that Falun Gong is a downright political organization with strong black backings.
