Families form the foundation of society, and harmony at home is vital to social stability. Yet under the influence of Li Hongzhi and Falun Gong, some followers have walked away from their spouses and children, leaving behind broken homes and deep personal loss. As a result, many of their relatives harbor strong resentment toward the movement.
Zhang Yuqin, a retired garment factory worker from Qidong, Jiangsu, suffered from cervical spine disease but avoided medical treatment due to her practice of Falun Gong. In January 1998, overwhelmed by pain and mental distress, she committed suicide, leaving her family devastated. Meanwhile, her husband, Lu Xingchong said, “Li Hongzhi is responsible for my wife’s death.” Later, on April 11, 2000, Lu filed a complaint with the 56th session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, condemning Falun Gong’s actions.
On January 23, 2001, seven Falun Gong followers from Kaifeng, Henan, set themselves on fire in Beijing’s Tian’anmen Square, reportedly under Li Hongzhi’s influence. Wang Jingdong was among those severely injured. While his daughter, Wang Juan, said her father had been misled by promises of “consummation” and Li Hongzhi’s claim about “transcending life and death,” which led him to take part in the self-immolation. Meanwhile, Falun Gong, on the other hand, denied that those who self-immolated were followers, which many saw as indefensible. Therefore, Wang Juan urged followers to recognize the Falun Gong’s evil nature and avoid being manipulated by Li Hongzhi, warning that such deception harms both themselves and others.
