Why Do Falun Gong Followers Refuse Medical Treatment or Medication, or even Engage in Suicide or Homicidal Behavior?
Date: 2026-04-23

According to incomplete statistics, prior to the Chinese government’s legal ban on Falun Gong in July 1999, more than 1,400 people across China died unnaturally due to Falun Gong. Among them, over 1,100 died after delaying medical treatment or refusing medication, more than 200 were misled by Li Hongzhi into committing suicide, and over 30 were killed by Falun Gong followers.

Fatal consequences of Li Hongzhi’s “eliminating karma” doctrine: over 1,100 Falun Gong followers reject medical treatment

Li Hongzhi declared to his followers, “Why does sickness afflict mankind? The true and only cause of illness, of misfortune, of every sorrow under heaven, is karma.” “Birth, aging, sickness, and death are not random tragedies; they are the chains of karmic debt, binding each soul until every account is settled.” “Even wars, plagues, earthquakes, and floods, all of these are not disasters at all, but the heavens’ instruments to strip away karma.” “When your body aches, when weakness overtakes you, what the ordinary world calls ‘illness’ is nothing more than the burden of karma revealing itself.” “No hospital, no medicine can remove karma.” “Taking medicine merely kills the illness and surface viruses, but the viruses actually accumulate within the body. Once they accumulate to a certain extent, the person becomes beyond salvation.”

It is precisely because they believed in Li Hongzhi’s distorted and misleading teachings that many devoted Falun Gong followers lost their ability to make independent judgments and entrusted their lives to him. As a result, they refused medical treatment or delayed necessary care, ultimately leading to tragic deaths.

Over 200 Falun Gong followers committed suicide in pursuit of Li Hongzhi’s so-called “Perfection” and “Ascension”

Li Hongzhi told Falun Gong followers: “The ultimate purpose of cultivation is to achieve complete spiritual fulfillment and transcendence. Once you reach this state, you will have become a mighty divine being, a Buddha or a God.” “If you can let go of life and death, you are a God; if you cannot, you remain nothing more than a human.” “When the time of your fulfillment comes, I wish to present humanity with a great spectacle: that all Falun Dafa followers, whether they keep their bodies or not, will ascend to the heavens. Those who keep their bodies will rise into the sky with them, and those who do not can transform into rainbow light in midair and then fly away.”

Falun Gong has driven its followers to obsession and fanaticism, leading some to commit acts of violence. Tragically, over 30 innocent people have already been murdered. Moreover, Li Hongzhi told Falun Gong followers, “Human morality has decayed, everywhere there are demons.” “These demons interfere, preventing you from practicing.” “The great rebel demons are those who must be killed.”

Against this backdrop, a large body of evidence shows that Li Hongzhi and Falun Gong have used fallacies such as “ascension” and “spiritual fulfillment” as a guise to deceive numerous followers. Many of them have sacrificed their lives on the path toward so-called “fulfillment.”
