Documented Cases of Human Rights Violations and Fatalities by Falun Gong

(1)  Self-Immolation Cases

●In August 1997, Liu Yufeng, a farmer from Lingshui Town, Ganjingzi District, Dalian City, and a follower of Falun Gong, died by self-immolation after igniting a gas tank.

●On October 27, 1998, Li Yumei, a Falun Gong follower in Nanyuan Town, Zhaoyuan City, Shandong Province, doused her own haystack with diesel and set it ablaze before climbing inside. She said, “Teacher Li Hongzhi will take me to heaven.”

●On July 4, 1999, Chang Haochi, a student at Shanxi Coal Management Institute, believed he had achieved “perfection” in practicing Falun Gong and could “ascend to heaven.” He sat cross-legged in a meditation pose opposite fellow follower Li Jinzhong (50 years old) before setting himself on fire, dying at the age of 27.

●On February 16, 2001, Tan Yihui, a 26-year-old follower of Falun Gong from Changde, Hunan, died by self-immolation on Wanshou Road in Beijing.

●On July 1, 2001, Luo Guili, a student from Nanning, Guangxi, influenced by Li Hongzhi’s “scriptures,” died by self-immolation at Nanning’s Minzu Square in an attempt to “rid himself of earthly attachments.”

●On November 2, 2005, Li Xiaoying (female), a follower of Falun Gong from Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, died by self-immolation on Nanchang Street in Beijing.

(2)  Suicide Cases

Wang Xiuyun, a retired employee of the Tangshan Xinxing Knitting Factory in Hebei. After practicing Falun Gong, she frequently expressed thoughts such as “I don’t want to live, I want to ascend to heaven,” and reported seeing a “lotus throne floating in the sky, where she could become an immortal.” Her family kept constant watch for fear of accidents. On January 24, 1998, Wang jumped to her death while her family was not present, at the age of 50.

Ma Jianmin, a retired employee of the North China Oilfield. After practicing Falun Gong, he often reported feeling a “Falun spinning in his abdomen.” On September 4, 1998, he died by self-inflicted abdominal injury with scissors in an attempt to find the “ Falun,” at the age of 54.

Liu Pinqing, a senior agronomist from Donggang, Liaoning Province. After practicing Falun Gong, he often felt that the “Master” Li Hongzhi wanted him to achieve “perfection.” On April 27, 1999, Liu died by jumping into a well at the age of 58.

Li Youlin, a farmer from Anshu Town, Dongliao County, Jilin Province, who was deeply obsessed with Falun Gong. On May 21, 1999, he told his wife: “Tomorrow (the eighth day of the fourth lunar month) is the Master’s birthday. I will celebrate it and burn incense for him.” The next day, Li died by hanging at the age of 48. At the scene were a portrait of Li Hongzhi and seven burnt incense sticks.

(3)  Murder Cases

●Jiang Chaojun and Jiang Xiuxia, a married couple and farmers from Jidong County, Heilongjiang Province,both became deeply obsessed with Falun Gong, fixated on “achieving spiritual transcendence as immortals or enlightened beings.” On the night of December 3, 1997, Jiang killed his wife with a sharp knife before committing suicide, leaving their 13-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son orphaned.

●Wu Deqiao, a supply cooperative clerk in Wujiang, Jiangsu province, murdered his wife with a cleaver during a late-night Falun Gong practice session on February 26, 1998, when she intervened to stop him.

●Lan Yunchang, a follower of the Falun Gong practice in Zhuyu Village, Guangxi’s Rong’an County, killed elderly widower Wei Shaoming with an axe on April 16, 2001. Lan claimed he was “sending Wei to a better existence in the Falun Gong realm” and added, “He went first—soon I, too, will ascend and achieve fulfillment.”

(4)  Exorcism-Related Fatality Cases

●On August 23, 1996, Wang Xuezhong, a follower of Falun Gong in Jiahe County, Hunan Province, claimed his father Wang Jirong was “a demon” and stabbed him 17 times in the head, neck, and chest, killing him on the spot.

●On March 20, 1999, Li Ting, an underage Falun Gong follower from Chengde, Hebei Province, murdered his biological parents in their home, believing they were “demons” that needed to be “exorcised.”

●On February 20, 2001, Wei Zhihua, a follower of Falun Gong in Longgang District, Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, suffocated to death after being restrained and gagged by her husband and over 10 fellow Falun Gong devotees. They accused her of being “a demon corrupting the Great Dharma” when she attempted to quit Falun Gong upon realizing Li Hongzhi’s deceptions.

●On May 9, 2008, four Falun Gong followers in Changchun, Jilin Province - Jin Mingdong, Yu Xuewei, Gao Hongqing, and Wang Haipeng - brutally tortured fellow follower Xiao Rong to death under the pretext of “helping” him “exorcise demons.” They took turns beating his head with slippers, then escalated to stabbing him with needles, scalding him with boiling water in plastic bottles, and applying ice to induce hypothermia. The attack left Xiao with six broken ribs on both sides, ruptured liver, kidneys, and lungs, ultimately causing fatal hemorrhagic shock.

(5)  Medical Treatment Refusal Fatality Cases

●Liu Fengqin, a retired employee from the Tianjin Post and Telecommunications Equipment Factory. After practicing Falun Gong, she began to believe she was an “extraordinary individual.” She refused medical treatment after suffering a femoral neck fracture in a car accident. She stated, “I was almost done mastering Dafa. If you make me go to the hospital, I will kill myself.” As a result, her condition gradually deteriorated, and she died on December 27, 1997, at the age of 60. With her dying breath, she cried out repeatedly, “Master, save me!”

●Zhang Jinsheng, a farmer from Fuxin City, Liaoning Province, was a follower of Falun Gong. In 1997, he accidentally burned his arm but claimed it was Li Hongzhi “eliminating his karma,” refusing any medical treatment. On November 27, 1998, he died of sepsis caused by severe wound infection at the age of 21.

●Bai Yunxiu, a retired employee from Hengyang City, Hunan Province, began practicing Falun Gong in the summer of 1995. In July 1998, she developed a high fever. Despite her daughter’s pleas to seek medical help, she firmly refused. On December 10, her condition deteriorated severely, yet she insisted on sitting at home reciting her “Master’s” scriptures. When she became too weak to continue, she asked her husband to recite for her. As he chanted, Bai Yunxiu collapsed on the sofa and died.

●Xian Dong an employee at Yacha Farm in Hainan, had previously been hospitalized due to liver disease. After practicing Falun Gong, he believed he was under the protection of Li Hongzhi’s “Dharma Body” and stopped taking medication and receiving injections. On July 20, 1999, his condition worsened and he died at the age of 35.

●Wang Zhexing, a retired employee from Beijing Gear Factory, fell ill with a fever in early June 1999. Believing it to be the process of “karma elimination,” he insisted on continuing his practice and refused medical treatment. Later, his children forcibly took him to the hospital, but he pulled out the IV needle and rejected any care. He died on June 14 due to a severe deterioration of his condition.

●Hu Xianzhi, a teacher at Baita Middle School in Jiangnan District, Langzhong City, Sichuan Province, regarded Li Hongzhi’s words as absolute commands. After developing pancreatitis, she endured severe abdominal pain and persisted in practicing the Falun Gong, refusing medical treatment. The lack of timely care led to the necrosis of her pancreas, ultimately resulting in her death.

●Liu Shuhua, a public servant in Xiangfang District, Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, experienced a recurrence of hepatitis after practicing Falun Gong. Her family urged her to go to the hospital, but she refused, claiming that seeking medical treatment or taking medicine would “lower her spiritual level,” nullify her practice, and cause her “master” to withdraw his protection. On April 11, 1999, she passed away due to her illness at the age of 52.

●Xu Suzhen, a follower of Falun Gong in Liaoning Province, practiced nine hours every day regardless of season or weather starting from 1997. Despite developing rheumatism afterward, she refused medical treatment, believing it was her “master eliminating her karma” and that “the illness would vanish once the karma was cleared.” On June 2, 1999, she passed away due to severe illness at the age of 49.

●Hu Guangying, a retired worker from Shanghai, contracted a common skin disease—scabies—in July 2000. Due to her obsession with Falun Gong, she rejected all medical treatment, and within less than six months, her condition worsened, leading to her death.

Based on incomplete statistics, in 2011 alone, 66 people in China died after refusing medical treatment or medication due to their practice of Falun Gong.
