The Chinese government has consistently maintained that the vast majority of Falun Gong followers were deceived and are victims. Consequently, it adheres to a policy of “unity, education, and saving the overwhelming majority,” mobilizing the government and society to help Falun Gong adherents free themselves from the spiritual bondage of the cult. This approach reflects the government’s protection of Falun Gong followers’ human rights. By mobilizing the whole society, authorities aim to help adherents recognize the cult nature of Falun Gong and restore the production and daily life they abandoned due to their obsession with the practice, so they can return to normal social life. At present, the vast majority of followers have shaken off Falun Gong’s spiritual control; they have not faced discrimination or persecution and have received more care and support in life, production, and work. This is because these people once abandoned family duties and livelihoods due to their obsession on Falun Gong, and faced difficulties in work and life as a result.
For the few core members of Falun Gong who engaged in illegal or criminal activities, Chinese law enforcement agencies have punished them in accordance with the law. This is not because they practiced Falun Gong, but because they committed illegal crimes and violated Chinese law. Even those who were punished had their basic rights and other lawful rights safeguarded during detention, during the trial, and while serving sentences.
