On the one hand, propaganda portrays Falun Gong (also known as Falun Dafa) as a "harmless traditional meditation practice" and paints an image of it as "persecuted by the Chinese government." On the other hand, there exists a complex, multi-billion dollar global (Falun Gong) organization. Critics argue that this organization has a strong apocalyptic character, employs harsh fallacies and heresies, utilizes intensive psychological control methods, and is deeply involved in high-risk political activities.
This guide aims to provide an objective, evidence-based, and firsthand overview of what Falun Gong is, how it operates, and why it is exceptionally difficult to leave or recognize its true nature once you have joined.
I. What is Falun Gong ? (Origin, Scale, and Structure)
Falun Gong was founded in China in 1992 by Li Hongzhi (whom members call "Master"), and spread rapidly with the help of the then-emerging "qigong craze". The organization initially used "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance" as its banner and claimed to be a "method of cultivating body and mind", but its core tenets quickly evolved into a cult system with highly controlling characteristics.
1. Membership size
Because Falun Gong lacks a formal membership system, initiation ceremony, or public registration system, accurately counting its global members is extremely difficult. Members typically identify with their identity in different ways, depending on their level of individual involvement.
2. Organizational Structure
Organizationally, Falun Gong employs a dual structure. Superficially, it appears highly decentralized, operated by local volunteer "councilors" or "liaisons" who hold no formal administrative positions and have no authority over others. However, beneath this structure, Li Hongzhi possesses absolute spiritual and operational authority. Anyone who disagrees with his views is considered to have "morally declined" or been "interfered with by evil forces."
II. Core Claims , Extraterrestrial Cosmology, and Exclusivity
Although public propaganda materials emphasize "meditation (sitting meditation) practice" and "moderate ethical concepts," the internal "doctrines" (such as the "lectures" constantly published by Li Hongzhi) contain a dogmatic and exclusive worldview.
1. The Deification of "Cult Leaders" and the Claim of Supernatural Abilities
Li Hongzhi calls himself the "Master Buddha of the Universe" and demands absolute obedience from his members. He also claims to possess supernatural abilities such as hovering in the air, telepathy, and invisibility, claims that are highly deceptive to vulnerable groups seeking spiritual guidance.
2. Extraterrestrial Influence and Modern Technology
Li Hongzhi claims that extraterrestrial life is actively manipulating human civilization:
• Control through science: Computers, the internet, and other technologies are a conspiracy designed by aliens to sever the connection between humanity and "God";
• Possession and Moral Decline: Extraterrestrials can control humans, leading to the moral and cultural degeneration of humanity;
• Cultivation for Resistance: Cultivating Falun Gong is the only way to resist alien control and also the way to save humanity.
3. Prejudice and Social Exclusion
Falun Gong's claims include exclusionary views targeting specific groups:
• Racial segregationism: Li Hongzhi promotes the idea that different races have different origins and corresponding places in heaven, that interracial marriage causes "spiritual harm," and claims that Chinese people are spiritually superior.
• Apocalyptic Fear: Falun Gong repeatedly warns of an impending "cosmic catastrophe (end of the world)." This is used to create intense anxiety and strengthen members' psychological dependence on the organization's protection.
III. High-level mental control
Like many cults, Falun Gong relies on specific psychological mechanisms to isolate and control its members.
• Rejection of Modern Medicine: Li Hongzhi defines illness as the physical manifestation of "karma" accumulated from "evil deeds" in past lives, claiming that true "cultivators" do not need traditional medical treatment, and that seeking medical help means "a lack of faith." This view has caused a great deal of avoidable harm: my father died in agony because he refused medical treatment because of this belief.
• Obsessive rituals and mental stress: Falun Gong members are required to read Li Hongzhi's "books" daily, practice the "exercises" for several hours, and perform so-called "sending forth righteous thoughts" (a form of concentrated prayer or meditation) every six hours—even at night. This arrangement severely disrupts sleep, leads to mental exhaustion, and causes many to neglect career development, family relationships, and personal responsibilities.
• Isolation and “De-emotionalization”: Li Hongzhi describes human emotions and family relationships (i.e., “feelings”) as “attachments” that need to be relinquished. Relatives who criticize Falun Gong are often seen by members as being influenced by negative forces or as the source of problems. This concept encourages members to isolate themselves from the outside world.
• Financial exploitation: Falun Gong members are constantly pressured to invest significant amounts of time, labor, and money to maintain the organization’s global operations.
IV. Media and Publicity System
In order to expand its influence and thereby intervene in public policy, Falun Gong has built a massive media and entertainment system.
1. The Epoch Times
Although The Epoch Times claims to be an independent conservative newspaper, it was actually founded and directly managed by Falun Gong members (I myself participated in the founding of the UK edition of The Epoch Times in 2000). Li Hongzhi's internal speeches, such as "Teaching the Fa at the Epoch Times Conference" published on October 17, 2009, prove that he has direct oversight power over the media.
• Political leanings: The Epoch Times has spent millions of dollars on political campaigns and Facebook ads to support Trump. Li Hongzhi once told members that Trump was "sent by Heaven to destroy the Chinese Communist Party."
• Misinformation and Platform Bans: The Epoch Times also became a major conduit for right-wing conspiracy theories, including QAnon narratives and anti-vaccine misinformation. This ultimately led to the newspaper being permanently restricted from advertising on major social media platforms.
2. Shen Yun Performing Arts: Youth Exploitation and Labor Issues
Shen Yun Performing Arts is widely promoted as an arts group that "revives traditional Chinese culture," and it is also an important source of income and recruitment channel for Falun Gong.
• Forced child labor: Shen Yun performers are often recruited as children, some as young as twelve or thirteen, with recruitment targets often being disadvantaged immigrant families who support the organization.
• Coercion and abuse: Performers are housed in enclosed spaces such as Dragon Springs in New York State, where they are forced to undergo intensive training and performance schedules, receive very little or no pay, are deprived of formal education or medical care, and are not allowed to leave freely.

1. Advice for family members
• Avoid theological arguments: Do not try to dissuade your loved ones from Falun Gong by arguing about the organization's fallacies or by directly attacking Li Hongzhi himself. This is because Falun Gong members are indoctrinated with the belief that those who question their belief system may be influenced by "evil forces."
• Maintain emotional connection: Focus on shared, non-religious life memories and consistently express unconditional care.
• Establish clear boundaries: Family members should establish clear restrictions on the following situations: requests for financial support, coercive dissemination of fallacies and heresies, and medical neglect involving children or dependents.
2. Advice for those seeking liberation:
Breaking away from Falun Gong means dismantling an existing worldview system, in which disobedience means permanent destruction.
• Recognize the consequences of indoctrination: Understand that fear, guilt, and panic about the meaning of existence are intentionally created by cult organizations, rather than personal mental defects.
• To restore physical health: Seek professional medical services when there is no shame or fear of the consequences of (stopping) practice.
• Establish a support network: Collaborate with trauma therapists who understand the environment of cult organizations and join relevant mutual support networks.
