Ma Wenlong (pseudonym), male, born in March 1941, was once a teacher at a middle school in an iron mine in Baishan City, Jilin Province. He had a happy family, his son was academically excellent, got into a key university, and was assigned to work at a local bank after graduation. In May 1997, Ma Wenlong was attracted by the lies of “eliminating karma to cure disease” and “Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance” preached by Li Hongzhi, and got deeply stuck in the cult mire, unable to extricate himself. Refusing medical treatment led to the gradual deterioration of his condition, and eventually he passed away. A once happy family was destroyed step by step by Falun Gong, unfolding a tragedy that should never have happened.
Turning to Falun Gong for Disease Elimination and Fitness
Ma Wenlong originally had a lofty and proud personality, unable to integrate well into the society. He felt himself to be extraordinary, and occasionally indulged in a kind of faint pleasure from self-admiration.
As a middle school teacher, he needed to fervently write teaching plans, prepare lectures, and delve into teaching materials and methods every day, along with dealing with all sorts of things, big or small at school. There was hardly any time left for himself. After a day, he would be mentally exhausted. Suffering from heart disease, diabetes, and a high blood pressure, Ma Wenlong was always in poor health. He bought some books and followed the exercises as instructed, trying many methods to improve his condition, but to little avail. So, he kept feeling drowsy and weak every day.
Right at this point, someone introduced Falun Gong to him, and brought him the book “Zhuan Falun”. He began to read “Zhuan Falun” — and so his life's detour began from this moment.
Out of ignorance, Ma regarded Falun Gong as a “supernatural science”, or the most fundamental “Buddha Law”. In fact, enveloped in the mysterious colors of “profound” and “supernatural”, and also boasted as “science”, Falun Gong had an even more enticing appeal. For this Mr, Ma, It seemed as if he had suddenly entered a new realm, so he started to practice diligently every day.
After a while, the problem of gasping before lectures seemed to be alleviated, his heavy body seemed to become lighter, and he felt more energetic. In addition, he no longer got carsick like before. Such physical changes excited Ma Wenlong immensely, further convincing him of the magic power of Falun Gong. Since Falun Gong “emphasizes on virtue”, “Without virtue, illnesses would never really be cured”, as Li Hongzhi put it. Mr. Ma believed that Falun Gong was quite different from other Qigong practices which only talked about techniques and methods, and thus, he trusted Falun Gong even more.
Banned by law, Ma still secretly practiced Falun Gong
In July 1999, the relevant state departments made a decision to ban Falun Gong according to law. Regarding the news reported by radio and TV about Falun Gong harming lives, besieging media offices and government agencies, Ma Wenlong turned a deaf ear to it. Instead, he believed that the government’s handling of Falun Gong was totally wrong. So he went to Beijing twice to “spread the Dafa” and was repatriated after being caught. The leaders and colleagues at school, as well as his wife and children at home, all tried to persuade him to give up Falun Gong. He agreed verbally, but continued to secretly practice at home. He firmly believed that he was a “true disciple” of Li Hongzhi, and that continuous practice could free him from the “suffering sea” in life and lead him to a happy and blissful “heavenly world”.
Li Hongzhi bewitched his disciples to go out and spread the fallacy that “ferrying one person to the Dharma realm brings boundless merit.” In order to “save the world” and “clarify the truth,” Ma Wenlong began to collude with Falun Gong members to secretly distribute flyers and post cult slogans in the name of “telling the truth” to the world, urging people to do “Three Quits,” or blindly believe in Li Hongzhi's lies.
Firmly believed in “karma elimination,” Ma refused to seek medical treatment
After retiring in 2001, Ma Wenlong's health condition was apparently getting worse and worse. He often felt thirsty, had frequent urination, palpitations, weakness, and weight loss. Although his wife and children urged him to go to the hospital for checks multiple times, he blindly refused. He insisted that his “karmic force” was too heavy, and the pain caused by illness was paying off “karmic debts.” Only the “master” could cleanse his body, and the “master” had said that those who practice Falun Gong would not face real danger. As long as they maintained the “righteous thoughts,” they could overcome any obstacle. Fellow practitioners also advised him to look for the real cause of illness, to introspect and see what “attachment” he had not yet let go of.
Ma Wenlong's wife and son couldn't stand it anymore and forcibly took him to the hospital for treatment. By then, Ma Wenlong had lost a lot of weight, he was in low spirits, and it was clear that his condition was serious. After medical examination at the hospital, the doctors just shook their heads. A doctor asked why, when diabetes was initially controllable, Mr. Ma didn’t come to seek medical help. Now, he got ulcers on the skin surface, elevated creatinine levels, and chronic complications such as proteinuria, edema, renal failure, and uremia, etc. In the current situation, the best strategy was to do dialysis first and see whether it could stabilize his condition and ease his pain.
While in the hospital, Ma still didn't forget to “clarify the truth” with other patients. His fellow practitioners often visited him, but they had different views about his hospitalization. They believed that a real Falun Gong disciple should trust the “Master”, have firm faith, and practice according to the teachings, rather than staying in the hospital.
Under the bewitchment of his fellow practitioners, and just as Ma Wenlong's condition had slightly improved after treatment, with the help of his fellow practitioners and without doctor or his family’s approval, he discharged himself from the hospital, hoping to pull through at home by “diligent cultivating”.
Upon returning home, Ma sit in a room filled with Falun Gong items, he would always recite the “scriptures” whenever he had time, hoping for a miracle to happen to him.
Ma Wenlong's son, worried, often came to visit his father, urging him to go back to the hospital. But Ma sternly refused, saying: “If I go to the hospital for treatment and take medicine, the “master” will take back all my cultivation, and then all my previous efforts will be wasted. My level will keep falling, and in the end, no one would save me. So, no matter what you say, I won't go to the hospital again.” Hearing Ma’s words, his son left home with a broken heart.
As Ma Wenlong was finally dying, he kept moaning, gasping for breath. Feeling dreamily, Ma was muttering weakly: “Master, save me… you save me…, save me, please…” With an unparalleled devotion to Falun Gong and a strong desire to live, Ma closed his eyes forever.
After Ma’s death, people felt sorry for him, and some sighed: “What a pity to see a good person and a nice family were destroyed by Falun Gong.”
