In the initial days of recognizing the true nature of the Almighty God cult, Ms. Jiang Fengjuan was in tears all day long, often waking up crying even in her sleep. In these tears, like broken strings of pearls, there was a deep longing for her lost youth, an overwhelming guilt for not fulfilling her filial duties to her parents and relatives for many years, and an immense hatred for the deceit and harm caused by the Almighty God cult. She deeply regretted her momentary impulsiveness and greed, which led her into the quagmire of the Almighty God cult. She dedicated 18 years of her youth to this so-called “God,” only to wake up to a nightmare and find it all in vain.
A moment of impulsiveness, she ran away from home in search of freedom
Jiang Fengjuan (alias), female, born in February 1983 in a rural farming family on the outskirts of Hefei, Anhui Province. In Jiang Fengjuan's memory, her father was 7 years older than her mother, had a more paranoid and irritable personality, and was quick to anger. Although her mother was gentle and docile, she suffered from intermittent mental illness, which flared up once or twice a year. Influenced by the local preference for boys to continue the family line, after Jiang Fengjuan, the already struggling family welcomed another sister and a brother. With the birth and growth of the younger siblings, Jiang Fengjuan, as the eldest sister, silently shouldered burdens far beyond her age: at a young age, she had to wake up early every day to help her mother cook, take care of the siblings, and after school, she had to cut grass, herd cattle, feed pigs, and do farm work. Due to financial difficulties, Jiang Fengjuan left school before finishing middle school to work, relying on the meager income she earned at a garment factory to support her family. In those years, Jiang Fengjuan would almost every year return home and hand over all her hard-earned savings to her father. However, for a poor rural family, this meager income was like a drop in the bucket. Her poor father remained perpetually worried, sighing all the time, and would still frequently get angry and scold Jiang Fengjuan.
In the year 2000, 17-year-old Jiang Fengjuan had grown into a graceful and beautiful young woman. A family from a neighboring village came to propose marriage, offering a dowry of 50,000 yuan to marry off their intellectually disabled son. Faced with a stack of colorful bills, the father agreed to the marriage without consulting his daughter. When Jiang Fengjuan, who was working away from home, returned for the Spring Festival and learned of this, she vehemently disagreed. Tearfully, she told her father that she was still young and did not want to marry early. However, her father wouldn't listen and scolded her harshly, blaming her for not understanding the family's difficulties. Seeing that she couldn't win the argument with her father, the furious Jiang Fengjuan, in a fit of anger, decided to run away from home.
However, Jiang Fengjuan never expected that after escaping the clutches of an arranged marriage, she would fall into the trap of Almighty God before finding freedom and happiness.
A little lapse from vigilance, she went astray and fell into cult traps
After Jiang Fengjuan ran away from home, fearing that her family would come after her to continue pressuring her into marriage, she hastily quit her job at a garment factory in Jiangsu. After several twists and turns, she ended up working alone in coastal Zhejiang in 2004. Since her father still insisted on the arranged marriage, Jiang Fengjuan spent four years evading it, visiting home less and less each year, and eventually stopped going back altogether. Unable to return home for a long time, she often missed her family. One day in the second half of 2004, the landlady noticed that Jiang Fengjuan was absent-minded and emotionally low. After persistent concern and questioning from the landlady, Jiang Fengjuan revealed the truth. With her own past experiences, the landlady carefully comforted Jiang Fengjuan and took care of her daily needs, making Jiang Fengjuan feel a long-lost warmth akin to motherly love, and she developed a fondness for the landlady. Gradually, the two became “good sisters” who shared everything with each other, unaware that there was a deeper motive behind the landlady's care and concern.
Later, the landlady slowly told Jiang Fengjuan that she used to be a Christian, but now she believes in an incarnate Almighty “Goddess,” or the “Female Christ.” She said that as long as you follow this unique “True God” in the world, you will have no worries, no insurmountable obstacles, and everything in the world is under the control of this “Goddess.” All mortals need to do is obey, and they don't have to worry about anything. Everything for themselves and their families will get better, and whatever they want, they will have. She also gave Jiang Fengjuan several books, such as “The Word Appears in the Flesh,” “Almighty God, You Are So Good,” and “The Scroll Opened by the Lamb,” instructing her to read them whenever she had time. The more she read, the more she would know “God,” and knowing “God” would bring disaster relief, peace, and blessings.
In the days that followed, Jiang Fengjuan would read these books whenever she had free time from her job, and she would go to gatherings with her landlady once or twice a week. During the gatherings, different people would come to “communicate” with Jiang Fengjuan, which meant talking and sharing with her. After a few gatherings, they gave Jiang Fengjuan a spiritual name “Lanlan,” asked her to make offerings, write guarantees, and swear oaths to never betray “God.” Here, everyone called each other brothers and sisters, which made Jiang Fengjuan feel very close and loved, like a family. In the days away from home, it seemed she had found a sense of warmth and belonging. Over time, Jiang Fengjuan gradually grew fond of the atmosphere among the followers of Almighty God. This allowed her to temporarily forget the troubles and emptiness of her real life, bringing her an unprecedented sense of joy and fulfillment. She no longer worried about marriage, future, or fate, believing that as long as she contributed more money, she would eventually be able to go to another realm and live a carefree and beautiful life.
After a few months, Jiang Fengjuan went from passively listening to these stories and songs, to actively writing reflections and experiences, and then to proactively “communicating” her insights with others. Jiang Fengjuan thus let her guard down and step by step slipped into the traps of Almighty God.
A sigh of sorrow and despair, she was caught in cult traps, unable to extricate herself
Not long after, Jiang Fengjuan was assigned by the cult organization to “mentor new members.” Every day, she would take the book “The Scroll Opened by the Lamb” to the homes of those who might believe in “God,” read to them, explain stories, and extol the various benefits of believing in God. Six months later, Jiang Fengjuan was promoted to “church leader,” overseeing about twenty people, responsible for organizing and supervising the gatherings (communication), reading (drinking and eating God's words), and managing book materials of the believers. After her promotion, Jiang Fengjuan had to learn additional content, such as following the district leader to learn work arrangements, studying how to submit offerings, and how to better “spread the gospel,” often working for an entire day.
From the worshipful gazes of the “Brothers and Sisters,” Jiang Fengjuan believed she had found the value and meaning of life, and thus she became even more dedicated to the work of the Church. Apart from the necessary living and working, she immersed herself in Almighty God whenever she had time. She rarely went home before, but later she even seldom called, didn't send money back home, and her relationship with her parents grew increasingly distant. She thought to herself, now she must devote herself to God, serve God wholeheartedly, and when the Kingdom Age comes and God's' work is finished, she would have everything she wanted, so there was no rush for now.
In 2018, Jiang Fengjuan was promoted again to the leader of the community computer group, responsible for the work arrangements and the transmission of instructions for the district, community, and various churches. For this reason, Jiang Fengjuan withdrew her only savings of 8,000 yuan to purchase a brand-new laptop to carry with her. Through arrangements, she hid in a local reception family, staying indoors most of the day and engaging in secret activities.
As time went on, the workload of the computer group increased, becoming heavier and heavier. They had to work almost every day until midnight or even early morning, leaving no time to think about anything other than work or to handle matters outside of work. Sometimes the conditions of the host families were poor, with bad accommodation and food, which had to be endured and adapted to. Sometimes, she encountered district leaders with bad tempers and often suffered “correction and discipline.” No matter the situation, she was always blamed for any problems. During the days when Jiang Fengjuan was away from home “fulfilling her duties,” she grew tired of such a life. She thought about going home, about falling in love, getting married, and having children. But Almighty God wouldn't let her go home, saying that her family, who didn't believe in God, were Satanic devils opposing God. They said that the secret work of God would soon be completed, and if she fell in love, got married, and had children, it would delay the work of God's family.' If she didn't cooperate well with the work now, she would fall behind God's steps and be abandoned and punished by God.
Wanting to leave but unable to, wanting to follow but too exhausted, Jiang Fengjuan lived like a walking corpse, repeating a monotonous and numb life day after day. She was trapped in a quagmire, unable to extricate herself, all in the name of serving and following the so-called “true god”.
A gradual change in mindset, she decided to turn over a new leaf and embrace a bright future
In August 2022, Jiang Fengjuan, who was working on computer assembly in a host family, was arrested by the police. Facing police interrogations, Jiang Fengjuan showed no remorse. Instead, she believed she was being tested by God and was bearing witness for God. She secretly resolved that even if she had to spend the rest of her life in prison, she would not betray God or compromise the interests of god's family.
In order to help Jiang Fengjuan quickly escape from the quagmire of the Almighty God cult, government departments and anti-cult volunteers promptly carried out patient and meticulous education. Due to being under the control of cult ideology for too long and losing too much, Jiang Fengjuan, after gaining some understanding, immediately denied it again, always unwilling to give up the so-called “true god” she had believed in for 18 years. After everyone's unremitting efforts, and going through the difficult process of understanding—denial—re-understanding—re-denial—re-understanding, the Almighty God toxin that had long entangled Jiang Fengjuan was finally completely eradicated.
The awakened Jiang Fengjuan finally saw the cult nature of the Almighty God. She said painfully: I once had the chance to wake up, but I chose to believe blindly and got stuck in the quagmire of Almighty God and couldn't get out. She recalled her previous experiences, where a community leader suffered a stroke due to overwork, leading to hemiplegia. Almighty God not only failed to send her to the hospital in time but also immediately replaced her after she fell ill, driving her out and saying that the “house of God” is not a nursing home and does not take care of the elderly. There was also a “brother” who fell off his bike on the way to a meeting and ended up dying from a stroke. Seeing these people believe in “God” so devoutly, didn't “God” claim to be almighty? Able to control everything? Didn't they say that believing in “God” could ward off disasters and bring blessings? Why didn't this “God” protect such a good follower? Jiang Fengjuan did have doubts at the time, but because she was intimidated by the heretical teachings of the Almighty God cult and remembered the pledge she had written, “I will never betray God, otherwise I will die a horrible death and be torn to pieces,” she dared not have any doubts and missed many opportunities to wake up. Thinking back now, she feels truly foolish.
After waking up, Jiang Fengjuan was once in unbearable pain, unable to accept herself like this. Seeing her peers getting married and having children, while she remains alone, having not properly fulfilled her filial duties, and the most terrible thing is that she has wasted 18 years of her youth on Almighty God. With tears in her eyes, she mocked herself: Why I was so foolish? How could I be deceived by a fraud for 18 years!
