Xu Huijun, 33, had received education at the senior secondary school level. She was a native of Tiefeng District, Qiqihar, Heilongjiang Province. She used to work at the No.2 Road Bridge Engineering Co. of the Qiqihar Railway Bureau. She married Li Xiaochun, a worker at the No.1 Road Bridge Co. of Qiqihar Railway Bureau, in October 1992. They have a six-year-old boy.
In August 1998, Xu Huijun joined an English learning class at the Qiqihar Normal College. There, one of her classmates introduced her to Falun Gong. From then on, the usually cheerful young lady turned quiet and eccentric, often chanting something alone with a stony expression. Her family members tried hard to talk her around from Falun Gong. She refused, saying, "My master said that the Earth will be destroyed. If you do not practice Falun Gong, it will be hard to escape with your life in the catastrophe. If you want to escape the catastrophe and seek asylum, you all have to practice Falun Gong." On May 30, 1999, she was found in a distraught condition. For a while, she said, "We are in the dire peril," and that she would go first. Then, she would say the Earth was really going to be destroyed. Her family and the neighbors tried to dissuade her for half a day. She did not respond at all, maintained a stony expression, with tears welling up in her eyes. At 6 o'clock on May 31, she dressed up and climbed from the second floor where she lived to the sixth floor, and jumped to her death from a window.
