On the evening of December 16, 1999, 6-year-old preschool girl Xu Che was killed in bed by her mother with a kitchen knife, who was a Falun Gong practicer. Dong Yan, staff of the water supply company of Liaohe oil field in Liaoning Province, ran out of the apartment building in underwear with her feet naked and blood all over after killing her daughter. She murmured, "going up to heaven, going up to heaven…" Dong's husband was on the night shift at that time. When he dashed back home, he saw his daughter died tragically in bed.
Dong said afterwards, "I was practicing Falun Gong. When I practiced, I felt that I did not reach the real Buddhahood. In order to release Xu Che's soul from suffering, I felt it was time. I took a kitchen knife and walked to the room, hacked several times on the face and neck of my daughter. Her blood spattered on my underpants, and I went downstairs to release her soul." Dong also said, "A devil told me that night, 'if you kill your daughter, you can become a Buddha.' My love to my daughter is wrong." Dong was diagnosed mentally ill by Kangning Hospital in Jingzhou City of Liaoning Province.
Dong began to practice Falun Gong in October 1996.
