Jiang Chaojun, born on June 7, 1954, was a native with primary school education in Jiangwan Village, Shantoufang Township, Xiangcheng County, Henan Province.
Jiang Xiuxia, Jiang Chaojun's wife, was born on October 16, 1957, also with a primary school education.
The couple, having a daughter and a son, moved from Henan Province to Pingyang Town in Jidong County of Heilongjiang Province in 1989, both the husband and wife were honest and industrious farmers. Apart from doing farming work, the husband also worked temporarily in the Tobacco Purchasing Station at Pingyang Town, while his wife sometimes sold fried dough twist, a traditional Chinese food. Though not rich, the family led a happy life.
The couple began to practice Falun Gong in November 1997, and soon became infatuated with it. They stopped attending their business and paid no attention to their children's studies. Believing in Li Hongzhi's wild tales on going up to Heaven through practicing Falun Gong, the husband and wife went outside in the night on December 3, 1997. They took turns at carrying each other on their backs and tried to fly. But all their attempts failed, after covering some two kilometers. Still dreaming of becoming immortals, Jiang Chaojun cruelly plunged a knife into his wife's stomach and mouth after they returned home, killing her instantly. Jiang Chaojun himself died after a seven-day fast while being detained for investigation. Their 13-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son became orphans.
