At about 18:10 on December 8, 2004, a woman was found covered in blood near the stairway entrance to a building in Meijiang District, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province. The neighbors immediately made emergency calls. Although police and doctors came quickly, the woman died from loss of blood.
The results of the police investigation revealed that the woman committed suicide. The police found out that the woman was Zeng Fanzhen, who was living with her eldest daughter in a suite in Wuzhou Youhao Building at Meixing Road, Meijiang District, Meizhou City. Zeng Fanzhen was an obsessed follower of Falun Gong. There were several photos of Li Hongzhi placed around her living room. There were also dozens of Falun Gong books including Zhuan Falun, publicity materials and tapes at her home.
Zeng Fanzhen was born in May 1951. She had two daughters and had been a widow for several years. Her eldest daughter was married, and the youngest daughter was working in a hospital in Meizhou.
According to her eldest daughter, Zeng Fanzhen was introduced to a man named Li Biyou who was living in Chengjiang, Meixian District at the end of 2001. Later they lived together at Li’s home. Zeng Fanzhen thought that her good luck was brought by Falun Dafa, and so she got increasingly obsessed with Falun Gong. Her boyfriend was opposed to Falun Gong, so she practiced the cult’s rituals in secret.
In August 2004, her boyfriend discovered that she was practicing Falun Gong. He advised her to stop, and warned that he would break up with her if she did not stop the practice, but Zeng Fanzhen did not heed his warning. Instead, she attempted to persuade Li Biyou to join Falun Gong. Since he had failed to stop her, Li Biyou broke up with Zeng Fanzhen and she moved back to live with her eldest daughter in the Wuzhou Youhao building. During her stay at her daughter’s home, she spent more time practicing Falun Gong and meeting with other Falun Gong followers. She also encouraged her daughter and her son-in-law to join Falun Gong.
Her eldest daughter confirmed that Zeng Fanzhen had arranged her funeral before she committed suicide. She gave her daughter 10, 000 Yuan in cash and jewelry, saying, “These are for your business. They are useless for me. I will achieve consummation soon.”
On December 8, 2004, Zeng Fanzhen tried to achieve consummation by self-injury when she was at home alone, but she failed. She then jumped off the building, to her death.
