Liu Xiaobao, once called Liu Zhiyun, male, 35-year-old, Han nationality and a high school graduate, was a farmer of the 6th team of Zuibei village in Tanghu Township of Tongcheng County, Hubei province.
He began to practice Falun Gong in May 1997. September 30, 1999, he was detained by the Tongcheng Public Security Bureau for continuing engaging in illegal activities and disturbing social order after Falun Gong was banned. When released from custody, Liu Xiaobao did not show any repentance. He thought that his merits and virtues had been satisfactory through practice and was ready to be raised to heaven.
At the night of December 6, 1999, Liu Xiaobao burnt charcoal in the bedroom with windows and doors closing, in order to commit suicide and rise up to heaven by producing carbon monoxide through insufficient burning of charcoal. At about 11:00 that night, Liu Xiaobao invited another Falun Gong practicer to his home and carried his three underage children (Liu Xing, girl, 10-year-old, studying at the 3rd grade in primary school; Liu Shan, 9-year-old boy, studying at the 2nd grade and Liu Shengchao, 7-year-old boy at the 1st grade) to his bedroom. Then, he burnt his and his children's clothes. He also wrote several poems on the wall to express that he was the reincarnation of Kwan-yin Buddha, Liu Guoqing was a "golden arhat", Liu Xing and Liu Shan were "Kwan-yin's children" and Liu Shengchao was the "Kwan-yin's vehical- the White Crane Fairy". At 8:00 am the next day, Liu Xiaobao and the other 4 were found poisoned unconscious by carbon monoxide. They were received emergency treatment in the hospital in time.
In April 2000, the court of Tongcheng County sentenced Liu Xiaobao three years confinement for crime of intentional homicide and 4-years probation. After being convicted and condemned, he stopped practicing Falun Gong. He also claimed that he would separate from Falun Gong once for all and try to turn over a new leaf by well supporting his elder and raising his children when he got home.
