Zhang Cuiyun, 54, a retired worker from the No. 4 Dongdian Company in Horqin District of Tongliao, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Zhang's husband worked far away from home, so after her retirement, she was usually alone at home. She was quite healthy before she started practicing Falun Gong in 1996, often in her company's compound and at home as well. Three months later, Zhang Cuiyun became obsessed with it. Zhang and her daughter lived in a two-bedroom apartment, Zhang occupying the inner bedroom. She always locked herself up in her room and practiced, not allowing anyone in, not even her own children or grandchildren. Except for sleep, she spent all her time to practice. She became psychologically unbalanced and refused to take any medicine when she fell ill. About 8 o'clock on the morning of 23 August, 1997, she unexpectedly jumped out of the window from the third floor and died despite emergency treatment at the hospital.
