Mr. Shen, 40, was a private businessman with a senior high school educational level. He was hospitalized in 1998. He had started practicing Falun Gong three months before in order to cure his mother's illness. He practiced Falun Gong day and night. After two months of practice, he lost his appetite and his speech and actions were disordered. In order to open his "celestial eye" he banged his head against a corner of a table and burnt his fingers with cigarettes. He thought the people around him were conspiring to kill him. He was diagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia.
