56-year-old Huang Ying (a pseudonym) is from Leizhou, Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province. She once had a happy family with a diligent and practical husband who was the middle-level leader of an enterprise and a satisfying daughter who worked in a central hospital after graduating from a prestigious university. The harmonious relationship in her family was greatly admired by relatives, friends and neighbors. However, just as their family life was going better and better, Huang Ying almost ruined everything by herself after falling into claws of the Falun Gong cult.
She fell for the Falun Gong cult due to her desire to get rid of diseases and keep fit
It all started one morning in 1998 when Huang Ying went to the park to exercise as usual. But on that day, she spotted some people practicing a form of Qigong she had never seen before, then she learned that it was called Falun Gong.
An elderly woman who was practicing Falun Gong noticed that Huang Ying was deeply attracted, so she stopped and sat down with Huang Ying, saying, “This is different from any other form of Qigong, because not only could it cure diseases and help keep fit, but also pass on ‘Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance’ to people so that they could be better ones. As long as you keep on learning Dafa, practicing Falun Gong, and cultivating your temperament as the “Master” asked, you would grow your capabilities, accumulate your good karma, improve your level, or even possibly ascend to kingdom of heaven. Why don’t you come and learn from me? We’re all imparting Falun Gong to people voluntarily, so it’s totally free of charge.”
Although Huang Ying was a nurse in a local enterprise hospital, she suffered from many chronic diseases and needed to see doctors and take medicines all year round because she often had too much work and too little rest when she was in rural areas in her youth. Thinking this might be a suitable form of Qigong for her, she decided to give it a try and learned from the elderly woman for a while. Being a dedicated person, Huang Ying mastered all five forms of Falun Gong exercise soon. After practicing them for some time, Huang Ying felt that she was much better than before, so she was very convinced that she made a right choice and became obsessed with learning Dafa and practicing Falun Gong. Although she was a thrifty housekeeper, she lavished her years of earnings and savings on Falun Gong’s books, tapes and CDs of her Master Li Hongzhi’s lectures given in cities around the country. She was so addicted to them all day long that she thought about what her “Master” Li Hongzhi demanded even when she was eating, drinking or sleeping in order to achieve further advancement.
Gradually, under the influence of fallacies and heresies of Falun Gong, dramatic changes had taken place in Huang Ying’s mind. In the past, Huang Ying was quite concerned about state affairs, and often read books and newspapers. She used to work in a proactive and diligent manner, and held a rational view about people and events. But after she practiced Falun Gong, she stopped caring for state affairs, and she became close-minded, one-sided and world-weary. In her opinion, she regarded both the society and government as completely worthless while she forgot she was actually the beneficiary of the reforms and opening up policy. Moreover, she was no longer devoted to her work, and all she cared about were fallacies such as “one person in a family practicing Falun Gong would bring benefits to the whole family”, “Karma elimination”, “Level-up”, or “Consummation”, etc. She even fantasized about becoming a Buddha in the kingdom of heaven by practicing Falun Gong.
One day, Huang Ying had a high fever of 42℃ and was about to be delirious. All of her family members asked her to see a doctor, but she refused by mumbling, “My Master says it’s not illness but karma to be eliminated, and practitioners shouldn’t take any medicine or medical treatment, otherwise the karma would not be eliminated but concealed.” Although she insisted on not going to hospital, her family realized that she had been completely unreasonable due to her blind obedience to the cult, so they took her to hospital anyway in fear that she might lose her life. However, instead of thanking her family for saving her life after her condition turned to be steady in the hospital, she blamed them for sabotaging her “cultivation”, accusing them of “demons” interfering with her further advancement.
She abandoned her family to pursue the so-called “consummation”
On July 22, 1999, the state banned the Falun Gong cult in accordance with the national law, but Huang Ying couldn’t come around to it, so she still insisted on learning and practicing Falun Gong in public. Out of concern, her leaders and colleagues from work all tried to dissuade her form believing in it, but Huang Ying rejected their persuasion and drove them away in a blunt and arrogant attitude.
Seeing that her mother was more and more addicted to Falun Gong and more and more indifferent to other people, her daughter also tried to dissuade her from her belief by saying, “Mom, please don’t practicing it anymore.” Not only did Huang Ying reject the pleading, but also she scolded her daughter loudly, “My Master says, one person in a family practicing Falun Gong can bring benefits to the whole family! You know nothing about it, so you should shut up and stop interfering with my learning and practicing ever again.” Her daughter was so hurt by those cold words and said in tears, “Mom, you’re no longer the mom I used to have, and I hate you!”
Her husband whom she married for more than 20 years also tried to dissuade her, and he even kneeled down to her in front of outsiders in order to talk her out of Falun Gong. He also begged her, “If you don’t give up Falun Gong, it’s too unbearable to live like this, but please never make it end up in a divorce.” But at that moment, Huang Ying who was determined to reach “consummation” immediately had the “enlightenment” that she must give up her family ties, otherwise she would never reach higher levels for her “Master” Li Hongzhi’ had said that practitioners should cultivate away fame, material interest, and emotion. So she rejected her husband abruptly in public, “Save your trick to try to trap me with marriage. And no one, I mean no one, can shake my resolve on learning Dafa and practicing Falun Gong.” All people present then were shocked and accused her of being “heartless, cruel and ruthless!”
Huang Ying bore firmly in mind Li Hongzhi’s words that “It’s the Fa-rectification period which is closer to reach consummation”, that “true cultivators should do three things every day which are sending forth righteous thoughts, clarifying truth, and saving all sentient beings”, and spared no efforts to make it her supreme code of conduct. Therefore, while keeping her family in the dark, she was furtively busy with contacting other Falun Gong cult followers, distributing cult propaganda materials, taking part in illegal cult activities, which was the reason why she often disappeared for days.
Her family was so worried about her that both her husband and daughter couldn’t eat well or sleep well. And the family life was also quite depressing then, not as happy as before. Huang Ying’ husband couldn’t help crying in agony and anger, “It is Falun Gong that ruined my family, a happy family! My family is about to be shattered now.”

She finally came back to her senses under anti-cult volunteers’ patient guidance
In August 2007, Huang Ying was once again reported to hand out cult propaganda materials by public tip-offs. In order to save her from the cult, the local government arranged anti-cult volunteers to visit and help her.
With the patient educational guidance, anti-cult volunteers made a painstaking effort to expose Li Hongzhi’s deceptive guises, expounding on many illegal activities done by the Falun Gong cult organizations, and analyzed its fallacies and heresies, which finally made Huang Ying come back to her senses and realize that Falun Gong is nothing but an evil cult through and through. The cult teaching preached by Li Hongzhi was quite tempting and deceptive. Li claimed that he had “placed a ladder to heaven”, that “cultivation can help people reach consummation and save sentient beings”. Therefore, brainwashing techniques in the form of Dafa learning made Huang Ying lose herself and her ability of discrimination. After knowing the truth behind the veil of deceptions, Huang Ying, who was kind-hearted by nature, became acutely aware of her mistakes, and was overwhelmed by the mixed feelings of remorse and shame at the idea of how deeply her wrongdoings in the past 9 years had hurt her family, relatives and friends. And she couldn’t help bursting into tears.

When Huang Ying’s husband and daughter found she had been truly determined to break away from the Falun Gong cult, the whole family embraced each other tightly and wept with joy. Whenever Huang Ying talked about her past with other people, she would always say with a sigh, “I would never imagine that Li Hongzhi, with a hidden agenda, could turn me into his tool by taking advantage of my simple wish for staying in good health and being a good person. Sadly, I worked myself to the bone for Li Hongzhi and his cult organization, posting slogans, handing out cult leaflets, and spreading cult fallacies that confused people’s mind, and disturbed social stability, and undermined the profound feelings and close relationship between the party and people. I have brought shame on my motherland who raised me, and I have hurt my family members who love me so much. Now, I fully realized that ‘the road to heaven’ preached by Li Hongzhi was nothing but ‘the gate to hell’. So, everyone should learn from my mistakes and stay alert to lies of all cults.”
