Ah Mei living in Foshan, Guangdong Province once had a happy family. Her husband was engaged in house demolishing industry which put down dilapidated houses outside. Although he had a steady income, he could only get back home every one or two weeks. In the spring of 1995, after giving birth to her daughter, Ah Mei started to suffer from puerperal fever. She was becoming weak and frequently had symptoms of numbness and aches of both hands and feet besides her previous stomachache, sciatica, etc. So, she stopped working and became a full-time housewife babysitting their daughter. As a person born with an eager to be excel, facing the situation where she had neither a job nor any source of income, totally relying on husband economically, Ah Mei gradually had a sense of inferiority.

New to the cult

In April 1997, Ah Mei suddenly felt a fit of dizziness when doing housework, and her abdominal pain increased which made big beads of sweat roll down her forehead. Fortunately, her female cousin living in the same village came to her rescue right at the moment. After inquiring after her well-being, her cousin started to preach “Falun Gong” to her. At first, Ah Mei did not take the cousin’s words seriously. But she was finally touched by her cousin’s preaching after hearing that practicing “Falun Gong” could cure diseases and improve health.

Soon afterwards, her cousin went to visit Ah Mei almost every day to teach Ah Mei how to practice “Falun Gong”. As many “Falun Gong” moves came from regular Qigong and Thailand dancing, plus the effects of psychological hints, Ah Mei did feel much better after practicing “Falun Gong”. When she occasionally didn’t feel so well, she would believe it was the result of “Karma elimination” which was done remotely by her Master Li Hongzhi. Gradually, Ah Mei started to have a psychological dependence to “Falun Gong”. If she spent one day without practicing it, she would feel uncomfortable and regard it as the sign that all diseases were getting back to her.

Bitter family disputes

After practicing “Falun Gong”, Ah Mei stopped caring for her husband when he got back home from work. As to her daughter, Ah Mei also stopped taking good care of her. She was frequently absent from home because she was busy at meeting with her cousin. These changes were slowly perceived by her husband, and consequently the conflicts between her and her husband began to arise. After learning what Ah Mei practiced was “Falun Gong”, her husband tried repeatedly to talk her out of it.

In July 1999, the state officially banned the “Falun Gong” cult organization in accordance with the national laws. Therefore, her husband became even more resolute and stern in his opposition to her obsession, while tension and conflict between them also escalated accordingly. Instead of questioning her obsession, Ah Mei started to “go out” furtively to distribute leaflets under the instigation of Li Hongzhi’s scripture that “those who only want to get benefits from ‘Falun Gong’ rather than make a contribution to the ‘Dafa’ are not true followers”. She fatuously believed that she was “saving people as many as possible by clarifying the truth,” totally ignoring her husband’s feelings, as a result of which they lived apart and their relationship became increasingly tense.

In the dead of the night, Ah Mei often lost her sleep and suffered from intensified pains in her feet, which made her paranoid about nearly everything. Thinking of quarrels with her husband, she started to doubt that her husband not only had “an affair” outside but also bought a house for the “mistress”. She even imagined her husband “had two children with his lover”. All these illusions made her feel that “it was really hard and painful to be a human”. Therefore, she turned to “Falun Gong” for spiritual comforts and refused to face reality, believing that “Falun Gong” was the only cure for all her diseases and problems. As a result, she was more addicted to her “cultivation”.

Seeing Ah Mei was deeply in the grip of the “Falun Gong” cult, her husband signed helplessly, “It was quite hard for me to earn money out of town so as to support the whole family, but whenever I came back home, it was cold and cheerless, all I could find were uncooked meal and piles of dirty laundry. Ah Mei almost spent all her spare time on leaning Dafa and practicing Falun Gong. Sometimes, she even went away from home several days in a row. Our little daughter had to learn how to take care of herself at such a young age, it really hurts me. Everything in the family was so messed up.”

The absence of a mother’s love

Since she started to practice “Falun Gong”, Ah Mei had put nothing but “Dafa” on her mind. Although her family was not a well-off one, she still spent a lot of her family savings on a computer, copier, glue machine and so on to facilitate the production of “amulets” and cult books Zhuan Falun (Turn the Dharma wheel) while totally ignoring her daughter’s daily life. For example, when her daughter’s clothes became tight on her or worn out, she would turn a blind eye to it. And she would be disgusted with her daughter when the child occasional cried. After graduating from junior high school, her daughter firmly refused to further her education and then worked in a factory. Because of her young age, the high working intensity and her unsociable personality since childhood, her daughter had no friends in the factory. After work, when her workmates in the same living quarter shared snacks as well as their littler secrets with each other, she would politely decline their offer and dodge aside.

Later, a lad in the factory who was from another province noticed her daughter and offered to help the lonely girl at work when possible. She was quite touched by his behaviors as a girl lacking of caring for over ten years. After a few years of dating, she married the lad who cherished her so much and they formed a family together.

One month before the daughter was about to give birth, the salary from the daughter’s husband was the only disposable income for this newly formed little family and their life was far from rich. The daughter said wearily, “If only my mother could love me a bit more by taking care of me or my baby.”

For the sake of their grandchild, Ah Mei’s husband asked Ah Mei to help their daughter. But Ah Mei asserted, “Our daughter has been married, so she has to be fully responsible for her own life. Everyone must take care of their own business.” Upon hearing the cold words, her husband stamped his foot in anger and shouted, “You’ve been more and more unreasonable. I just can’t stand it anymore!”

Wake up from day-dreaming

In November 2001, Ah Mei’s cousin was diagnosed early stage of uterine cancer. When learning the diagnosis from her family, her cousin was struck speechless with shock, fear and pain. All she had was confusion, “As a practitioner of ‘Falun Gong’, how could I suffer from cancer? Why didn’t I get protection from Master’s Fa bodies?” After knowing her confusion, the community workers used anti-cult knowledge helping her fully come to her sense. Then Ah Mei’s cousin agreed to have an operation and remove the lesion in her uterine.

Survived fetal illness, Ah Mei’s cousin visited her with guilt and tried to dissuade her from believing in Li Hongzhi’s fallacies by citing her own experience, hoping Ah Mei could get back to her normal family life and take good care of her husband and daughter. Instead of following her cousin’s advice, Ah Mei simply declined to see her cousin again. Seeing that there was nothing more she could do to help Ah Mei, her cousin shook her head and sighed in regret.

When the Covid-19 pandemic swept the world in 2020, Li Hongzhi took the opportunity to publish the so-called “scriptures” to bewitch and incite followers to make trouble against the government, declaring that “the plague is arranged by God because people’s hearts have gone bad, so the accumulated Karma is big enough to purge the human race.” Additionally, Li claimed that “there is no better elixir for redemption but truth clarification, Three Quits and whole-heated scripture reading.” In March 2001, in order not to be “left behind” by “Dafa”, Ah Mei went to the market to distribute Falun Gong leaflets, materials and video discs she daily collected and prepared, and was soon arrested by police after being reported by local people.

Community workers contacted Ah Mei’s husband and daughter in time. And this time, Ah Mei’s cousin also came to help Ah Mei once again. After seeing Ah Mei, her cousin told her emotionally, “20 years has passed since I underwent the surgery for my cancer. Now, I am still alive and healthy while the rest patients with terminal cancer in my ward have all died one after another. If I chose to believe in the ‘Falun Gong’s mantra of nine words’ instead of medical science, I would’ve been dead as well long time ago. It was the doctors and community workers who saved my life!”

This time, her cousin’s heartfelt words touched Ah Mei. With the joint efforts of her husband, daughter and anti-cult volunteers, Ah Mei finally realized the evil nature of “Falun Gong” cult. And she also understood that the reason why she felt good at the beginning of her practice lied in effects of the long-term exercise and psychological self-suggestion, which, she mistook for the result that Li Hongzhi was recuperating her body from illness. Actually, it was quite common for those so-called “Dafa disciples” to suffer from chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, etc. Many of them eventually died as a result of refusing to take medicine or medical injection which led to delayed treatment.

“24 years passed……I was so greedy and selfish when pursuing illusions of ‘reaching Perfection’ and ‘ascending to heaven’. Now I am terribly sorry for my husband and my daughter. Li Hongzhi is a big fraud through and through and his ‘Falun Gong’ is an evil cult, which almost destroyed my family.” After coming to her sense, Ah Mei felt she was deeply indebted to anti-cult volunteers for their patient help and education. Ah Mei said she would enhance communication with her husband and take good care of both her daughter and grandchild. She also said she would try her best to fill the family with warmth and love, and vowed never to fall for fallacies of any cult. Additionally, she called upon those believers who were still hoodwinked by cult fallacies to break away from the cult as soon as possible so that they could have their normal life back.
